LSG Playoffs Qualification Scenario: Can Lucknow Super Giants Finish in Top 4 of IPL 2023?

Lucknow Super Giants are eyeing their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy in their second edition of the tournament. The Lucknow-based franchise made it to the playoffs stage in their debut season but couldn't make it to the finals in the IPL 2022.

Coach Andy Flower and mentor Gautam Gambhir's side is aiming to put up a better show this season and lift the coveted trophy to create history. LSG have done well so far in the ongoing sixteenth edition of the premier domestic T20 competition.

The team, however, suffered a massive jolt ahead of the match against Gujarat Titans as their captain, KL Rahul, has been ruled out of the remainder of the competition due to a hamstring injury.

In KL Rahul's absence, the IPL newbies will be led by their vice-captain Krunal Pandya. The all-rounder - who has been in decent form in the ongoing competition - will look to lead his team from the front and guide the team to their second straight playoff qualification.

IPL 2023 playoffs will have the top four teams competing in the four games - Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2 and the Final - to decide the winner of this season. Teams that finish in the top two at the end of the league stage earn a second chance to make it to the final.

The teams finishing third and fourth in the points table play the Eliminator. The winner of this match will face the loser of Qualifier 1 in Qualifier 2. The winner of Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2 will eventually lock horns in the summit clash.

As the competition is heading to the business end, teams including Lucknow Super Giants are looking to qualify for the playoffs by finishing in the top four in the points table.

As it stands, LSG are third with 11 points from 11 games with Gujarat Titans, and Chennai Super Kings above them. Before the game against GT, they had a healthy net run rate of 0.639.

However, the Krunal Pandya-led side lost in Ahmedabad by a big margin of 56 runs in the run chase of 228 and their net run rate plummeted to 0.294. The loss against Gujarat has dented LSG's chances of finishing in the top two on their own.

GT (14 points) and CSK (13 points) currently occupy the top two positions, while RR (10 points), RCB (10 points), MI (10 points), KKR (8 points), DC (8 points) and SRH (6 points) make up the rest of the table.

As LSG are currently placed in the top four, they need to win the remaining games to keep it that way. LSG still have three games to go in the league stage, if they end up winning them all, they'll be at 17 points - which will be enough for them to qualify for the playoffs.

LSG's defeat against Gujarat Titans has reduced their probability of finishing in the top four now. Their confirmed chances of finishing in the top two would have been 36.57% had they won in Ahmedabad.

The Super Giants' confirmed chances of finishing in the top two are all but over with the loss against GT. However, they'll still have a 42.09% chance of qualifying in the playoffs by the end of the league stage.
