LSG vs DC Highlights Match 3 - IPL 2023 Season 16: Mark Wood, Kyle Mayers' star in big win for Super Giants

Mark Wood and Kyle Mayers stole the show in their debut games for Lucknow Super Giants to help their team register an emphatic 50-run win against Delhi Capitals in their IPL 2023 opening game here at the PCA Stadium in Mohali on Saturday (April 1).

Having posted a massive 193 for the loss of 5 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs, the KL Rahul-led side restricted David Warner and his band to 143 for 9 and pocketed two crucial points with the win.

Kyle Mayers steals the show on IPL debut

Kyle Mayers - who opened the innings for LSG after they were put to bat first - played a superb knock of 73 off just 38 deliveries. The West Indies all-rounder opened the innings for the Super Giants in the absence of South African Quinton de Kock along with Lokesh Rahul.

The aggressive left-handed batter - playing his debut IPL game - made most of the reprieve he got early in the innings when Khaleel Ahmed put down a sitter. Mayers didn't look back from then on and unleashed his beast mode. By the time he was dismissed, the Caribbean all-rounder smashed seven sixes and a couple of fours.

While captain Rahul was dismissed early, Mayers added 79 runs with Deepak Hooda (17) for the second wicket and laid the foundation for a big total for the hosts. He will certainly cause a selection headache in the coming games when QDK returns from national duty.

Later in the match, Nicholas Pooran - who was bought for a whopping Rs 16 crore - scored a quickfire 36 off 21 balls for LSG - playing their first home game - in the slog overs. Small cameos from Ayush Badoni and K Gowtham in the final over helped their team post a huge total on the board.

Khaleel - who had a poor outing as a fielder - was the most successful bowler with figures of 2 for 30. All-rounder Axar Patel (1/38) and Kuldeep Yadav (1/35) got some turn off the surface and got a wicket each.

Chasing a big total, Delhi Capitals got to a decent start as young India cricketer Prithvi Shaw (12) shared an opening stand of 41 runs with captain Warner but was dismissed inside the powerplay. Shaw and in-form Mitchell Marsh (0) were dismissed off consecutive deliveries by the pace merchant from England.

Wood's double strikes pushed Delhi Capitals on the back foot and the right-arm quick - who was also playing his first match for LSG - made his mark by grabbing a fifer. Such was the intensity and accuracy from Wood that he conceded just one boundary from his full quota of 4 overs.

Wood - who constantly clicked 140-plus in the match - finished with figures of 5 for 14 and ensured Super Giants register a clinical win. He was even awarded the player of the match for his stupendous show.

Warner lone warrior for DC

Captain Warner didn't find much support from the batters in the big run chase but the left-handed batter from Australia notched up yet another half-century in the competition. Warner scored a 48-ball 56 and kept waging a lone battle for his team against a spirited Lucknow side which hardly did anything wrong.

DC franchise might have lost the game but their gesture of hanging Rishabh Pant's jersey in the dugout received a lot of appreciation. Pant - who is the designated captain of the Delhi-based franchise - is missing this edition as he's recovering from the injuries he sustained in the car crash last year.
