Commentary
Evin Lewis hit the quickest fifty in IPL 2022 off 23 deliveries and young Ayush Badoni once again showed nerves of steel as Lucknow Super Giants defeated Chennai Super Kings by six wickets and register their first win of the tournament.
CSK, on the other hand, suffered their second successive defeat and despite posting a mammoth total of 210-7 the Yellow Brigade ended up on the losing side.
Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul put up the highest opening partnership in the ongoing tournament with a 99-runs stand for the first wicket.
The duo started the innings with caution as they took a couple of overs to settle down but soon after unleashed their beast mode against CSK's rookie pace duo of Tushar Deshpande and debutant Mukesh Choudhary.
The Yellow Brigade clearly felt the absence of their star bowler Deepak Chahar - who has a knack for picking up wickets in the powerplay and can bowl well in death overs.
Despite having a sedate first couple of overs, LSG reached 55 for no loss in the powerplay. In the final over of the powerplay bowled by Dwayne Bravo, Moeen Ali dropped a sitter at mid-off and gave De Kock a reprieve on 30.
Both Rahul and De Kock matched each other shot by shot and hit shots all around the ground as dew made gripping the ball tougher for CSK bowlers.
De Kock notched up his fifty off just 34 deliveries and kept the asking rate well under check for his team.
At the halfway stage LSG reached 98 and captain Jadeja introduced South Africa quick Dwaine Pretorius in the eleventh over and the right-handed pacer broke the dangerous partnership.
After Rahul was dismissed for 40 as Ambati Rayudu took a sensational catch running backwards at fine leg it looked like CSK had things under control.
Pretorius then ended dangerous-looking De Kock's knock for 61 (45 balls) as CSK pacers bowled a few tight overs in the middle overs. De Kock got a leading edge off the bat and the ball went way high in the sky and Dhoni pouched it comfortably.
But Lewis (55* of 23), Deepak Hooda (13 off 8) and Badoni (19* off 9) had ensured their team didn't fumble in the end.
The chasing side needed 55 off the last four overs and the LSG batters held on to their nerves to give them a memorable win.
Shivam Dube's 25-run 19th over was fatal for the Super Kings as captain Ravindra Jadeja had to introduce the medium pacer for the first time in the penultimate over.
The bowling was a major letdown for the Super Kings but dew also made the matters worse for the bowling side.
Earlier in the day, CSK batters showcased their big-hitting skills as the Yellow Brigade posted 210 for seven after being put in to bat first. Robin Uthappa opened the innings for Super Kings with young Ruturaj Gaikwad.
While Gaikwad was dismissed for just 1 in an unlucky fashion as a direct hit from Ravi Bishnoi from gully ran him out. It was the second successive match when the right-handed opener failed to make a mark.
But along with comeback man Moeen Ali, Uthappa provided his team with the impetus they required in the powerplay. The duo helped CSK post 73 in the first six overs and gave their team the start they would have hoped for.
Uthappa turned back the clock and smashed a 25-ball fifty while Moeen Ali scored a 22-ball 35 after walking into the middle at number three.
Both Ali and Uthappa looked at ease against LSG bowlers but their stand was broken after Bishnoi trapped Uthappa in front soon after the batter completed his 26th IPL half-century.
Moeen too didn't last long as his knock was ended by Avesh Khan.
But Shivam Dube - who was promoted to number four - made most of the opportunity as he smashed a 30-ball 49. The left-handed batsman hit five fours and two towering sixes before getting caught by Lewis in deep and missing out on a well deserved fifty.
Rayudu (27 off 20), Jadeja (17 off 9) and MS Dhoni (16* off 6) helped CSK go past the 200-run mark. CSK batters hit 33 boundaries (25 fours and 8 sixes) in their innings.
On a rather dull day for Super Giants bowlers, Bishnoi (2/24) did a tremendous job. Andrew Tye - who made his debut for LSG - managed to pick two wickets in his final over and finished with 2/41.

Lucknow Super Giants win by six wickets. A brilliant fifty from De Kock and Lewis, staying till the end to guide them home. The dew factor and some poor bowling from Super Kings have let them down today. Evin Lewis has been adjudged Player of the Match for his unbeaten 23 balls 55. Cheers.

In match no. 7 of the ongoing IPL 2022 season, defending champions Chennai Super Kings will take on newcomers Lucknow Super Giants at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
Both sides will look to collect their first points this season, having started off their campaigns on a losing note. While Super Kings lost their opener to Kolkata Knight Riders in the curtain-raiser, Super Giants went down to fellow-newcomers Gujarat Titans in their first IPL match.
Both, led by new skippers, will look to bounce back when they take to the field on Thursday. Ravindra Jadeja's CSK and KL Rahul's LSG had similar problems in their openers. The top orders of both teams failed to fire and they had a disastrous powerplay score in their openers.
While Super Kings openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway fell cheaply in their match against the Knight Riders, Robin Uthappa failed to build on the start. Skipper Jadeja looked far from his dangerous self in the opener. The only positive for CSK was former skipper MS Dhoni's return to form as he powered the side to a decent total with an unbeaten half-century.
Taking on Lucknow in their second game of the season, Super Kings will look to bounce back and their line-up will be boosted by the availability of Moeen Ali.
Meanwhile, Lucknow, one of the most balanced sides on paper in the ongoing edition, will have several aspects to fine tune. Skipper KL Rahul will hope to perform with the bat after he fell for a duck in their opener. Though the new-comers got off to a losing start, they will take comfort from Deepak Hooda's all-round show and Ayush Badoni's impressive IPL debut.
This will be the first time the two sides will clash in the IPL.
