Welcome back for the chase. Lhuan-dre Pretorius is all padded up and looks set to open the batting despite that nasty collision in the field. He will have the experienced Jonny Bairstow for company. ... THE RUN CHASE ...
Will 164 be enough? It will be a record chase in London Spirit's history if they can pull this off. In the only game played at the Oval so far this season, batting appeared to get easier in the second innings. What adds to MI London's challenge is the absence of Sam Curran and the variations he brings. It remains to be seen whether Lhuan-dre Pretorius is fit enough to open, or even bat at all after his collision in the field. Stay tuned as the chase is coming up shortly.
In conversation with Will Jacks - Jacks says that personally he found it a bit tricky, but it was a great finish and they have a competitive total on the board. Feels that it can be tough to defend on such a ground, so early wickets will be key. On being the leading scorer in The Men's Hundred, he says that he didn't even know that stat, but says that it feels good. Ends by saying that the opposition has a solid batting lineup and they don't have the services of Sam Curran with the ball, so they will have to do things a bit differently.
Hard lengths do the trick - London Spirit's new-ball attack gave a good account of themselves, repeatedly hitting the hard lengths to good effect. MI London managed just above a run a ball in the powerplay, but Will Jacks shifted gears soon after to inject some momentum into the innings. At 82/0 at the halfway mark, after scoring only 28 in the powerplay, MI London looked well placed, but Jamie Overton turned the tide by relentlessly banging the ball into the surface. He struck thrice in 6 balls, but thanks to some late hitting from Sherfane Rutherford, the home side managed to get up to 164.
A thoroughly entertaining first innings - It ebbed and flowed as the momentum swung back and forth between the two sides. 46 runs were scored off the last 20 balls, allowing MI London to finish with 164, which looks competitive at the halfway mark, but will it prove to be enough? Only time will tell.
OUT! CAUGHT! James Coles is back on the field and takes the catch in the deep, as MI London finish with 164/5 on the board. Andrew Tye serves it on a good length and on a straighter line at the stumps. Sherfane Rutherford lunges ahead and flicks it using the wrists, but there's not a good enough connection. The ball sails down to deep square leg, where Coles makes no mistake. 16 runs and a wicket off the final set.
SIX! Caught in the crowd! Length from Tye, in and around off, Rutherford plays a stylish shot, smashing it over deep cover for a biggie.
Into the wicket and pace off from Tye, bowled over middle. Rutherford sets up to pull but is undone by the lack of pace.
SIX! Streaky but Rutherford won't mind it one bit. Tye hammers it on a hard length, angling it away. Sherfane Rutherford swings for the fences and across the line but gets an outside edge that flies over deep third for a maximum.
FOUR! Easy pickings. Length ball on the pads, Rutherford gives it a flick of the wrists and gets it well over short fine leg for a boundary. 150 up now for MI London.
Andrew Tye to close out the innings. He went for 13 runs in his first set of five and has not bowled since.
Top delivery! A fast yorker, lands it just past the leg stump. Rutherford backs away and fails to dig it out.
SIX! Sails into the crowd. Back of a length over middle, Rutherford backs away well and forces the lofted shot over covers for a biggie.
A lot going on in that attempted shot from Tom Curran. He pre-meditates and shuffles across for the lap sweep. Milne follows him witn a full ball and Curran ends up dabbing it into the off side for a single.
Won't carry! Hard length, angled across from leg to middle. Rutherford steps out and ends up chipping it off the inside half of the bat to long on for a single.
WIDE! On a good length, seam-up as well but darted down the leg side.
Hard length around off, jabbed down towards mid off for a single.
Adam Milne is back for his final set.
SIX! Right in the slot and put away. Jamie Overton isn't happy with that last ball, but he finishes with 3 wickets to his name. Fuller one on off, Rutherford takes the front leg out and tonks it over long off for a maximum.
Another appeal for caught behind, which is turned down. The bowler likes it and this time Liam Livingstone is quick to review. Just short of a length, on a tighter line around off. Sherfane Rutherford swings across the line but misses. The third umpire is called in and checks UltraEdge, and there's no bat involved this time around. Not Out.
WIDE! Slightly pace off, dug in well short and around off. Rutherford leaves it alone for a wide.
Mistimed in the air, but will land safely. Shorter in length, angled across off. Rutherford leans back to pull but gets it high on the bat and towards the vacant mid on region for a couple of runs.
Rutherford is livid with himself here. Back of a length, angled across off, Rutherford comes down the pitch and throws his hands at it but misses.
FOUR! That's asking to be hit. Pitched full and outside off, with mid off inside the ring. Rutherford stays put and hammers it back over mid off for a boundary.
James Coles is feeling his back and is now making his way off the field with the physio. It looks like a delayed reaction after the collision, and he will head off for further assessment. Jamie Overton will continue...
Back of a length, slightly slower too. Curran camps back and swings it away to the right of deep mid-wicket for a run.
Just out of reach! Hard length, angled into the batter. Curran hangs back and makes room, going hard at it but gets it just over the leaping Andrew Tye at mid on for a couple of runs.
That's a snorter from Overton. Banged in short and over middle at 88 mph. Curran looks to hook it but the ball flies just over his helmet.
Lhuan-dre Pretorius is going off the field with the physio. Good to see that the medical staff from both teams rushed out immediately to check on the players. Pretorius receives a warm round of applause from the crowd as he makes his way off the field. Kiran Carlson is on as his substitute.
End of an action-packed day - Right then, four matches out of the way, and for now Manchester Super Giants stay on top of the combined points table. Earlier on, Trent Rockets travelled to Cardiff, and both the Men's and the women's sides ended up one-sided winners against Welsh Fire. After that, at the Oval, we saw a stalemate between the Women from MI London and London Spirit, as the first London Derby of the day ended in an entertaining tie. Now, in the final game of the day, the Spirit have managed to pick up their first win of the season, that too against their bitter rivals, against whom they have a pretty poor record in general. So, overall, it was a pretty great day for the visiting teams. Next up, the action continues in The Hundred, 2026 as Southern Brave welcome Birmingham Phoenix to Southampton on Thursday, July 30. What happened earlier? After winning the toss, London Spirit put the home side into bat. It was a stop-start innings with the bat for MI London, and it was Will Jacks who did well to shift gears after the Powerplay and get them into a promising position. The Spirit bowlers came back as Jamie Overton dusted off the misery of the last game to pick up 3 big wickets. With just about a par score in sight, Sherfane Rutherford came in and blitzed his way to 41 off just 19 balls, propelling MI London to over 160 runs.
Let's now hear what the Spirit captain has to say - Liam Livingstone admits it has been a frustrating start to the tournament, making it especially satisfying to end up on the right side of the result. He feels his side laid the platform with the ball, praising the new-ball bowlers for the way they have performed throughout the competition. Winning the toss also helped, and he adds that the bowlers adapted well through the middle overs by varying their pace and lengths. Livingstone is full of praise for his young batters, describing Dewald Brevis and Lhuan-dre Pretorius as two immensely talented players and a huge asset to the side. He believes The Hundred takes a little getting used to because of its unique format, and says it is the responsibility of the experienced players to pass on their knowledge and help the younger members of the squad adapt as quickly as possible.
It all got away early - After posting a very competitive total of 164 runs, MI London couldn't make an impact with the ball inside the Powerplay. They conceded way too many boundaries and just fed into the strengths of the opposition batters. Things became frustrating for them as the ball was changed 3 or 4 times, and that didn't allow the bowlers to get a grip. Rashid Khan was brought on very late in the fray, and even though he went for just a run a ball, he didn't pick up any wickets and had a bit of a run-in with Liam Livingstone and James Rew as well. Overall, the hosts missed Sam Curran, whose subtle changes with the ball might have made a difference.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Who else but Lhuan-dre Pretorius to get the accolade, truly deserved as well. Pretorius jokes that James Coles is a bit tougher than he thought after their collision. He reveals that at the halfway stage, coach Andy Flower checked in on him and asked how he was feeling. Pretorius is delighted they got over the line, saying it was important to get off the mark and he hopes the side can carry that momentum forward. On his batting, Pretorius says he spent plenty of time in the nets yesterday and had been working with Dinesh Karthik on the shot over short fine leg, and it paid off today. Speaking about playing in England, he says the contrast in conditions is remarkable, pointing out that Lord's is only 40 minutes away yet offers a completely different challenge. Looking ahead, Pretorius says Test cricket sits at the top of his ambitions and is the format he most wants to play.
Lhuan-dre goes berserk after the collision - The young southpaw opener had to go off the field late in the first innings after a hefty collision with James Coles, but Lhuan-dre Pretorius did come out to open and what a knock he played. 64 runs off just 28 balls, and he and Jonny Bairstow took the edge off the chase inside the Powerplay itself. The Spirit did lose a couple of wickets in quick succession in the middle phase, but Dewald Brevis smashed it to all parts of the ground and his unbeaten cameo of 37 off just 18 balls helped his side get over the line in a canter.
The North takes over - London Spirit have come to the Oval in South London and have handed the home side the loss. Just the second win in the London Derby for the Men of London Spirit in 10 matches, and they are up and running in the 2026 season. A win that was set up by two young Proteas, and even though there was some feistiness out there in the chase, it's all smiles now.
FOUR! That will do nicely. London Spirit win by 7 wickets and register their first win of the season. Boult serves it short, over middle. Rew rises with the bounce and rolls his wrists over the ball. Plays a controlled pull all along the ground, well to the right of deep square leg for a boundary.
Pace off now, on a length, on off. Brevis swings it down the ground. Hits it flat and on the bounce to long off for a single. 4 more needed for London Spirit.
FOUR! That has gone to the fence in the blink of an eye. Boult darts a full ball across the right-hander. Brevis moves closer to the line of the ball and cracks the drive past extra cover.
Full and angled in at the pads. Rew helps it away to deep fine leg for a single.
Trent Boult is back on to finish his spell.
FOUR! That should have been stopped. That sums up the second half of the game for MI London. Tom goes short, around leg. Rew swivels nicely and pulls it wide of deep fine leg. Richard Gleeson moves to his right in the deep but can't get low in time and lets it through.
Was that a chance? Seemed to be a bump ball. Curran gets the wide yorker in. Brevis jams it out onto the turf and it goes away towards backward point. Boult gets under it but loses the ball in the lights and takes his eyes off it. It catches him on the thigh as he drops to the ground and it goes away. Single taken. The replays confirm that it was a bump ball.
SIX! More of a slice, but it has still gone all the way. Out comes the back of the hand slower one by Curran, fuller and wider on off. Brevis hangs low and has a swing at it. The bat turns in his hand but he still manages to clear James Vince at the wide long off fence. 15 needed off 17.
SIX! Stand and deliver. At 86 mph, Curran goes into the surface but this sits up to be hit, on off. Brevis waits on the back foot and bludgeons it with a flat bat back over the bowler's head for a six.
Curran attempts the yorker but it comes out as a low full toss, on middle. Rew backs away and drills it to deep cover for one.
Tom Curran is back into the attack.
That's Rashid Khan done for the night. 20 runs off his 20 balls, but no wickets. Slightly fuller, at the sticks. Brevis makes room and powers it away but straight to extra cover. 28 needed off 20.
A bit of turn back in, on a good length, on off. Rew punches it through extra cover and turns the strike over.
Serves the googly, fuller and on middle and leg. Brevis puts his head down and clears the front leg for a swipe across the line. Mishits it through square leg for one.
Pushed across off, on the fuller side. Rew drags it away in front of square on the leg side for a run.
Flat and short, on off. Brevis presses back to force it away but mistimes it through extra cover for a single.
Rashid Khan will go again.
Swing and a miss, and just a boundary off that set. A bit fuller and outside off, turning in. Brevis looks to slog it leg side but fails to get a connection.
Good length around off, Brevis backs away again but hits it straight to Olly Stone at short extra cover.
FOUR! That's rocketed to the fence. Khan bowls it from behind the crease, a bit shorter and outside off. Dewald Brevis backs away and slaps it just to the right of Sherfane Rutherford at deep point for a boundary.
Length ball around off, slides on quickly, Brevis jams it off the back foot to cover.
Flatter googly at the stumps, turning in. Brevis rocks back to a full ball but manages to keep it out.
