New Delhi, March 13: After veteran India cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni, former India captain Kapil Dev has also backed cricketer Mohammed Shami following the allegations of match-fixing made by the Bengal pacer's wife Hasin Jahan.
The 28-year-old cricketer is facing charges of domestic assault after his wife accused him of infidelity and assaulting her when she confronted the cricketer for having extra-marital affairs.
Jahan first exposed the alleged chats between Shami and his 'girlfriends' and later went on claiming that the cricketer also fixed matches.
His wife accused the Delhi Daredevils cricketer took money from a Pakistani girl named Alisbah over the insistence of England-based businessman Mohammed Bhai.
It was to the allegations of match-fixing on which the cricketer found support from Dhoni and Kapil - who have won World Cup trophies for India. The legendary India all-rounder, Dev, said that he refuses to believe the allegations levelled by Shami's wife.
"I refuse to believe the allegations that have been levelled by Shami's wife. If she knew about match-fixing then why didn't she report it earlier?" Dev was quoted by ABP News as saying.
"When the relationship was fine, why was she silent then? There is an investigation team. Let them do their work. If Shami has done something like this then it is unacceptable and disgraceful."
"Shami is a brilliant hardworking cricketer. I agree that his personal relationship is in trouble currently but such kinds of allegations by his wife are nasty and sickening until proven."
Earlier on Monday, Dhoni told a Hindi news daily that Shami is a great human being and that he could never cheat his wife and his country. The former India skipper further added that no one should comment on Shami's personal life.
Dhoni was quoted by Jansatta, as saying, "As much I know Shami is a great human being and he can't cheat his wife and country, it is Shami's personal life and we should not comment on it."
The Kolkata Police on Friday (March 9) booked Shami and four others under various non-bailable and bailable sections after Jahan lodged a complaint of domestic violence and infidelity against the cricketer.
