This remarkable achievement took place during match 39 of the T20 World Cup 2024, held at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, where Ferguson’s New Zealand team faced off against Papua New Guinea.

In an extraordinary display of bowling prowess, Ferguson bowled four consecutive maiden overs, an unparalleled feat in the T20 World Cup.

During his spell, he also claimed three crucial wickets, significantly contributing to New Zealand’s dominance in the match. He took the wickets of Uganda skipper Assad Vala (6), Charles Amini (17) and Chad Soper (1).

This record-breaking performance by Ferguson is only the second instance in T20 international cricket where a bowler has bowled four maidens in an innings. The only other bowler to have achieved this remarkable feat is Canada’s Saad Bin Zafar, who bowled four maidens against Panama in 2021. Ferguson’s achievement thus joins a very exclusive club.

Ferguson’s four maiden overs against Papua New Guinea have now become the most maidens bowled by any bowler in a T20 World Cup match. Prior to this, the record for the most maidens in a T20 World Cup innings was held jointly by Sri Lanka’s Ajantha Mendis and India’s Harbhajan Singh, both of whom bowled two maiden overs in the 2012 edition of the tournament. More recently, Bangladesh’s Tanzid Hasan Sakib also bowled two maidens in the 2024 World Cup.
