Colombo, March 19: Team India witnessed an unprecedented support from Sri Lankan fans during the Nidahas Trophy final against Bangladesh as R Premadasa Stadium seemed almost a home ground for the Men In Blue.
Fans came out in big numbers to back Men In Blue as they were badly hurt by the behaviour of the Bangladeshi cricketers during the virtual semi-final against Sri Lanka.
The Bangladeshi cricketers went berserk with their celebration after beating the home side and making it to the finals. The reports of the glass window in the dressing room being broken by Bangladesh team painted them as villains and angered the local fans even more.
Consequently, Rohit Sharma and his boys received a huge reception and cheer on every ball being bowled and each runs scored, a sight that is almost a rarity in Sri Lanka. As the host nation missed out of the finals after facing defeat at the hands of Bangladesh, little had anyone thought that the tournament decider would witness such a huge turnout.
The crowd erupted into huge cheer the moment any Bangladeshi batsman was dismissed in by Indian bowlers. When Soumya Sarkar was dismissed cheaply for 1 by Yuzvendra Chahal, Sri Lankan fans kept shouting as the batsman made his descent towards the dressing room. Unable to hide his frustration and the constant cheering of the Sri Lankan fans, Sarkar lost his cool and hit the railings before climbing up the stairs.
The cricketer's frustration was recorded by one such fan in the park as they kept booing the left-handed batsman.
Here's the video in which the batsman displayed lack of maturity:
If one remembers the 3rd ODI match between India and Sri Lanka last year, when the Men In Blue toured the island nation for a full-fledged series, the crowd in Pallekele created a ruckus and threw bottles on the field as Indians were cruising towards a series-clinching win. But the sight on Sunday (March 19) was in contrast to what happened in August, last year, as the Lankan fans supported Team India.
After Dinesh Karthik smashed a six on the final ball of the innings bowled by Sarkar, India defeated Bangladesh by 4 wickets to lift the tri-nation trophy. The victorious team under the leadership of Rohit also took a victory lap in the ground to acknowledge the crowd for pouring out in big numbers to support them.
