Pakistan suffered a defeat in the first match of the tri-nation series against New Zealand on Saturday (February 8).
It was not the ideal start for Pakistan at the revamped Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, who succumbed to pressure as New Zealand won the match by 78 runs.

New Zealand amassed a huge score of 330 for 6 after batting first in the match. Kane Williamson (58 off 89) and Daryl Mitchell (81 off 84) scored decent half-centuries, but it was Glenn Phillips who stole the show with his maiden ODI century. The New Zealand batter scored 106 off just 74 deliveries to propel the Kiwis to a massive score. Shaheen Shah Afridi got three wickets but was massively expensive. The match also saw Haris Rauf leaving the field with an injury.
In reply, Pakistan lost Babar Azam early as he got dismissed for juts 10 runs. Fakhar Zaman, on his return, played a fantastic knock of 84 runs in just 69 deliveries, but it was Glenn Phillips who got Fakhar's wicket to put the body blow to the run chase. Salman Ali Agha (40 off 51) and Tayyab Tahir (30 off 29) put some fight but in the end the hosts got bundled out for 252 runs. Matt Henry and Mitchell Santner both got three wickets each for the Black Caps.

Mohammad Rizwan: It is always difficult when you lose. The wicket was difficult at the start and Kane Williamson batted extremely well. And then the way Glenn Phillips batted was excellent. We need to execute better and field well. But the way we played and bowled, I think it was decent. If we play an all-arounder, we can't expect him to bowl ten overs. There is no report, but as per the physio, it is not a serious injury (on Haris Rauf). As a batting unit, we have to analyze the situations. Hopefully, we can change things in the coming matches.
Mitchell Santner: Glenn's knock and his partnership with Bracewell gave us the momentum. We were looking at 280 or 300 at one stage but Glenn's knock was icing on the cake. There was a bit of help for spinners and the big wicket of Fakhar helped. To get Fakhar and Babar is not easy. We were able to chip with wickets in the middle, which was good. We have got eyes forward to Karachi. But we know how good Pakistan are in these conditions and the bounce-backs are not far away. He has got pretty big hands, so he makes it look very easy (on Bracewell Catch).
