Paul Adams Heaps Praise on Varun Chakaravarthy, Explains Why Spinners Dominate Modern Batters

Former South African spinner Paul Adams has lavished praise upon India's mystery spinner Varun Chakarvarthy for his excellent performances in the T20s. The tall spinner from Tamil Nadu produced his career-best figures in the second T20I against South Africa as he grabbed 5 for 17.

In a virtual media interaction felicitated by SA20, Adams - who has represented SA in 45 Tests and 24 ODIs and was known for his peculiar 'frog in the blender' bowling action - weighed in on spin bowling trends in the modern-day cricket, Chakaravarthy's emergence, and why modern batters struggle to tackle spinners.

Paul Adams Heaps Praise on Varun Chakaravarthy Explains the Rise of Spin Dominance In Modern-Day Cricket

Known for his distinctive style and insightful approach to spin, Adams also shared his views on the current spin landscape, the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia, and the impact of T20 leagues like SA20.

India vs Australia: High Stakes for Both Sides

Looking ahead to the India-Australia series, Adams anticipates a hard-fought contest with both sides showcasing their strengths. He commented, "The series is going to be a great affair, with some good cricket being played. The Australian side has some high-quality Test cricketers, and they've shown over the years that they always compete."

Adams is particularly interested in how Gautam Gambhir, recently appointed India's head coach, will lead the team. "All eyes are on that series and on Gambhir, to see how he goes about it. It'll be interesting to watch how India handles Australia's pace bowlers, especially with the likes of Cummins leading the attack."

Varun Chakravarthy: A Mystery to Batters

Adams was full of praise for India's mystery spinner, Varun Chakravarthy, whose controlled, varied deliveries have baffled South African batters during the first two T20Is in South Africa.

Chakravarthy's standout performances included an impressive 5/17 in the second T20I, even in a losing effort. Adams analyzed Chakravarthy's bowling style, noting, "Yeah, I think his control of length has been great in terms of bowling, his googly and his leggy. His release point is at a very similar height whether he's delivering a googly or a leg break, and that's been essential in challenging the batter's defence."

The 47-year-old highlighted how Chakravarthy's consistency has placed batters under constant pressure. "His control has been absolutely magnificent in terms of how to challenge the batter's defence, and they're not sure how to line him up or read his deliveries," he said, emphasising that the South African team would need to strategise on how to counter Chakravarthy in the remaining T20I matches as the four-match series is evenly poised at 1-all.

Modern Spin Bowling: Subtleties and New Challenges

Reflecting on the evolution of spin bowling, Adams noted how T20 cricket has reshaped spinner tactics. "Spin is playing a big role in T20 cricket, and I always believe that when batters play aggressively, it's an opportunity rather than something to fear. Spinners today have developed subtle changes in their techniques to counter that aggression." Adams credited the rise of T20 leagues with accelerating innovation among spinners, who must find ways to be economical and deceptive despite batter-friendly conditions.

Adams also observed a shift in spinner roles across formats, noting that many of today's spinners focus on shorter formats rather than Tests. "Back in the '90s, you'd see spinners playing Test cricket consistently. Now, it seems many spinners are more active in T20 and one-day formats. Test cricket requires a different skill set," he said. This shift, Adams believes, contributes to why batters today seem less adept at handling spin in the traditional format, as they often lack the patience and technique required for long-form play against high-quality spinners.

Further pointing to the broader trend: a decline in batters' ability to handle quality spin bowling across various cricketing nations, he remarked, "Spinners now know batters are going to play aggressive shots, so they use that to their advantage, adding subtleties and variations that disrupt the batter's timing and rhythm," he added further.

On Dinesh Karthik playing SA20

On the role of leagues like SA20 in shaping cricket, Adams believes that they provide crucial exposure to young players and increase international interest, particularly in countries like India.

Commenting on Dinesh Karthik's involvement in SA20 with the Paarl Royals, Adams remarked, "Having DK [Dinesh Karthik] in SA20 is going to be great for India's interest in the league. He's been a fantastic ambassador for the game and brings a lot of positivity and knowledge that will benefit domestic players here in South Africa."
