England defeated India in their own backyard to stamp their domination in the longer format of the game on the subcontinent pitches.

The series was remarkble from Alastair Cook's point of view who being a skipper led from the front and won the 4-Test series 2-1 once again.

The English had whitewashed India in England on their previous tour and the hosts were eyeing a revenge but the visitors outclassed a rather inexperienced India side.

The Test series would be remembered for the heroics of Alastair Cook, Kevin Pietersen, Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar for the English side. For India, the victory in the first Test at Ahmedabad was the only high point.

The four matches played in this series were at Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Kolkata and Nagpur respectively. The English came back strongly after losing the first Test and defeated India in the remaining three games and sealed the series.

Cheteshwar Pujara (206* in 1st innings, 41* 2nd innings) and Virender Sehwag (117 in 1st innings) were the top performers with the bat while Pragyan Ojha took 9 wickets in the match to help the hosts take 1-0 lead.

Alastair Cook's epic 176-run-knock inspired the visitors in the matches to come. The grit and resistence shown by the English skipper perhaps opened the team's eyes as they faced Indian spinners better.

Pragyan Ojha took 9 wickets in the match to help the hosts take 1-0 lead.

2nd Test: England bounce back strongly in Mumbai

Monty Panesar wrecked havoc:

Batting first India could only manage 327 in the first innings, thanks to Cheteshwar Pujara's 135.

But it was Panesar who wrecked havoc over India's batting lineup with 5-129 and restricted the hosts from posting a huge total. He also outclassed Indian spinners in this match.

Captain Cook leads from the front, Pietersen smashed 186

In response, England skipper Alastair Cook produced another century and slammed 122 while Kevin Pietersen smashed 186, perhaps his greatest Test innings, as guests posted 413 in the first innings.

Pragyan Ojha was the pick of the Indian bowlers with 5-143.

In the second innings, Indian batsmen perished to some quality spin by Panesar who took 6-81 and India were bundled out at 142.

Chasing paltry score England won the match by 10 wickets and levelled the series 1-1. Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann finished with 19 wickets in the match.

Scorecard: India 327 and 142; England 413 and 58/0 (9.4 ov, target: 57), England won by 10 wickets.

3rd Test: Visitors take 2-1 lead in Kolkata

After restricting India to a paltry 316 in the first innings England piled up 523 in the first innings to take a decent lead. Cook once again performed with the bat and scored 190 to build pressure over hosts.

Gambhir scored 60 & 40 in this Test but India once again failed to click as a batting unit and were all out for 247 in the second innings.

England, thus, required 41 runs to win the game which they won with seven wickets in hand.

For India, Ravichandran Ashwin scored an unbeaten 91 in the second innings and also gave the visitors initial breakthroughs by claiming 3 wickets. But the target was too less for the Indians to defend as a result they lost the game and England took 2-1 lead.

4th Test: Nagpur Test results in a draw, England win series 2-1

With Nagpur Test ending in a draw, England ended 28-year wait to win a series in India. This match will also be remembered for Joe Root's debut, who is considered a force to reckon with on the upcoming series, and Ravindra Jadeja.

Kohli's century was the only highlight for India

A young Virat Kohli slammed his third Test hundred in this game. He scored 103 in 295 deliveries and put up a 198-run stand with MS Dhoni (99) for the 5th wicket. His century was, perhaps, the only taking point for the Indians in this Test.

England made 330 in the first innings and later restricted India to 326. England later kept batting in the second innings (352 for the loss of 4 wickets) as the match ended in a draw.
