The Tamil Nadu off-spinner has completed yet another five-wicket-haul in the fourth Test match against England to equal former India pacer Kapil Dev's record of 23-five-wicket-hauls.

Indian spinner R Ashwin celebrates the wicket of England batsman Keaton Jennings on the first day of the fourth Test match against India in Mumbai.

Ashwin got the wicket of Ben Stokes on the second day of the Mumbai Test to complete his 23rd five-for and equal Kapil Dev's record.

Earlier on Thursday, Ashwin surpassed former India pacer Javagal Srinath to become seventh highest wicket-taker for India in Tests.

With his wicket of Moeen Ali, Ashwin completed 237 wickets to go past Srinath, who took 236 wickets in his Test career.

Ashwin completed seventh consecutive five-wicket-haul in the year 2016 and became the first Indian bowler to do so. He grabbed seven fifers in the calendar year 2015 as well.

Best performance by a spinner in a calendar year at home:

With 47 wickets for in Tests in India in 2016, Ashwin also produced the best performance by any Indian spinner in a calendar year at home. Erapalli Prasanna had claimed 46 wickets in 1969.

Ashwin is now behind Anil Kumble (35 in 132 Tests) and Harbhajan Singh (25 in 103) in terms of five-wicket-hauls by an Indian bowler.

Earlier, India's star spinner had matched former captain and all-rounder Kapil Dev's record in the 3rd Test against England at Mohali.

R Ashwin equals Kapil Dev's record

The Tamil Nadu right-hander on Nov 27 struck a half century in Mohali on the 2nd day of the Test match. With his latest fine innings, he has matched Kapil's feat.

Ashwin is only the second Indian player after Kapil to aggregate 500 plus runs and take more than 50 wickets in Tests in a year. Kapil did it twice in 1979 (619 runs, 74 wickets) and 1983 (579 runs, 75 wickets).

Overall only 7 players have achieved this distinction. England's Ian Botham (twice), South Africa's Shaun Pollock (twice), Mitchell Johnson (Australia), Daniel Vettori (New Zealand), Andrew Flintoff (England) are the other five.
