Ranji Trophy: Euphoria Around Virat Kohli's Homecoming at Arun Jaitley Stadium Leaves Selector, DDCA Officials in Awe

Virat Kohli is an enigma, plain and simple! He's one of the biggest crowd-pullers in world cricket whether he scores runs or not. His return to domestic cricket created an unforgettable spectacle on January 30 at Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium, mesmerising the cricketing world.

Unlike a routine Ranji Trophy fixture at the historic Feroz Shah Kotla, this match was special. Kohli, who did all the hard yards and honed his skills at this very ground before becoming a global cricket icon, was making his first Ranji Trophy appearance for Delhi in 12 years. The impact was immediate - searches for "Ranji Trophy" surged on Google over the last 24 hours.

Ranji Trophy Euphoria Around Virat Kohli s Homecoming at Arun Jaitley Stadium Leaves Selector DDCA Officials in Awe

Even before the gates opened, a festival-like atmosphere enveloped the stadium. Thousands of fans, some travelling over 300 km, queued up on a chilly Thursday morning. The sheer volume of spectators led authorities to open the gates an hour earlier than planned.

Speaking to MyKhel, DDCA Secretary Ashok Sharma expressed astonishment at the turnout. By toss time, nearly 13,000-14,000 spectators had already filled the stands. Also Read: Ranji Trophy Meets Virat Kohli Mania

"When Virat confirmed his participation, we expected a big crowd, but this exceeded all expectations. By 7 AM, thousands had gathered despite tight security due to the Prime Minister's scheduled visit to Rajghat," Sharma said.

"We had to open additional gates to manage the influx. Within minutes, multiple sections were filled, and the police instructed us to open the upper stands as well as they had to ensure the roads were clear due to the VVIP movement."

The overwhelming support for Kohli created an atmosphere more akin to an international fixture than a Ranji Trophy match. "In my years at DDCA, I've never seen such a massive turnout for a domestic game. The crowd kept pouring in, eager to watch their hometown hero in action. It was as if we were hosting a one-day or a T20 international match and not a Ranji Trophy game," Sharma added.

With Kohli expected to bat on Day 2, Sharma revealed that authorities are prepared to manage an even larger crowd. "The people of Delhi showed immense love for Virat and were thrilled by his presence. They are eagerly awaiting his return on day two i.e. January 31. We have made extensive arrangements, and as the crowd grows, we will continue opening the gates as needed," he added further.

Sharma and the stadium staff aren't the only ones dazzled by this spectacle. The electrifying atmosphere also left former India cricketer and North Zone selector Ajay Ratra in awe.

"I don't remember such a massive crowd coming to watch a Ranji Trophy game in the recent past or during my playing days," Ratra - who has played 99 First Class and 89 List A games apart from 6 Tests and 12 ODIs - said. "It shows the love and respect a cricketer has earned in his career," the former India wicketkeeper added.

Commentators WV Raman and Rajat Bhatia echoed the sentiment and the former likened the memorable scenes to legendary Sachin Tendulkar's farewell Ranji match in Lahli (Haryana) back in 2013.

Kohli likely to miss BCCI Annual Awards due to Ranji match

Due to his participation in the ongoing Ranji game, Kohli is likely to miss the upcoming BCCI Annual Awards 2025, scheduled on February 1. His absence from a high-profile BCCI event is a rare occurrence, given his stature and regular presence at such gatherings.

However, his decision to play in the Ranji Trophy after nearly 12 years aligns with the board's push for senior players to prioritise domestic cricket. If the Delhi vs. Railways match concludes early, he might still attend, but otherwise, the BCCI will have to go ahead without its biggest star.

This scenario underscores the board's renewed commitment to strengthening domestic cricket, even at the expense of missing a marquee player at its event. It also highlights Kohli's dedication to setting an example by embracing these new directives. If he does miss the awards night, it would symbolize a shift in Indian cricket's priorities, reinforcing the growing emphasis on domestic participation.

Kohli has added countless achievements to his illustrious career, but the sheer significance he brought to this Ranji Trophy game with his presence proves why he is a once-in-a-generation cricketer who will be celebrated for aeons!
