Ravichandran Ashwin consolidates top spot in ICC Rankings for Test bowlers, achieves personal best

The 30-year-old Tamil Nadu bowler reached his personal best in the ICC rankings by claiming career high 904 points.

New Delhi, Dec 13: Modern day spin wizard and India's star spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, has maintained his dominance at the top of ICC Rankings for Test Bolwers after his match-winning haul of 12-167 in the fourth Test against England at Wankhede Stadium.

Riding over Ashwin's seventh 10-wicket-haul in Test cricket, India on Monday (Dec 12) defeated England by an innings and 36 runs to take an unassailable lead of 3-0.

The 30-year-old Tamil Nadu bowler reached his personal best in the ICC rankings by claiming career high 904 points.

Ashwin, who had touched the coveted 900-point mark for the first time in October when he had reclaimed the top-ranking, has reached 904 points to run up a 37-point lead over second-placed Rangana Herath of Sri Lanka.

The Tamil Nadu bowler was on a wicket-taking spree and grabbed six-wickets in both the innings of the Test match. Ashwin surpassed former India bowler Kapil Dev's record of 23 fifers in Test cricket. The tall off-spinner has bagged 71 wickets in Tests in the year 2016.

The number one bowler in ICC Test rankings, Ashwin, claimed all four remaining wickets in a matter of 30 minutes as India defeated visitors on fifth day of the fourth Test.

Ashwin's rating is the second best-ever by an off-spinner after Muttiah Muralitharan (920), fifth best among spinners after Tony Lock (912), Derek Underwood (907) and Shane Warne (905), and the 18th in the overall list.

Ashwin, who has grabbed 27 wickets in this series so far, had finished the 2015 year-end rankings as the number-one bowler and was also at the top briefly in July this year.
