Awestruck by the chase master's performance against Punjab Kings, Parag, overwhelmed with admiration, simply put a 'GOAT' emoticon as a tribute to the batting legend.

Fast forward three nights later, Riyan Parag himself took centre stage, exhibiting his immense talent as he led Rajasthan Royals to a thrilling 12-run victory over Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2024 clash at Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Thursday (March 27).

Elevated to the number 4 position by the Rajasthan Royals team management, the 22-year-old all-rounder from Assam emerged as a symbol of resilience for the home side during testing times.

With extraordinary determination, Parag single-handedly propelled Rajasthan Royals to a formidable total of 185 for 5, crafting an unforgettable unbeaten innings of 84 runs from just 45 deliveries, adorned with seven fours and six sixes. This outstanding performance was not an isolated incident but rather a continuation of his fine form from the previous match, where he scored 43 runs.

Fighting another battle before DC encounter

Even before this game, the young cricketer from Assam was facing challenges, confined to bed due to health issues. He disclosed that he had been relying on painkillers for the past three days before mustering the strength to participate in the game.

Despite facing health setbacks, he expressed gratitude for his recovery, stating his happiness at being able to contribute to the team's success. During the post-match presentation, Parag conveyed his sentiments, highlighting the support of his family, particularly his mother, who witnessed his struggles over the past few years.

Emphasising his unwavering self-belief, regardless of his performance outcomes, and attributing it partly to his successful domestic season, the right-handed batter stated, "(Emotions) They are settled, mom is here, she has seen the struggle, the last 3-4 years. I know what my opinion is about myself. That does not change regardless of whether I get a zero or not. That's a lot to do with the type of season as well, I had a great domestic season and that helps."

"Someone in the top four has to play the 20 overs, the wicket was keeping low and stopping, in the first game, Sanju bhaiya (Sanju Samson) did it. I have worked very hard, the last 3 days I was in bed, I was on painkillers, I just got up today and I'm very happy," Parag signed off.
