Rohit Sharma expresses wish to play ODI World Cup 2027: 'I haven't really thought about retirement'

Rohit Sharma is in no mood to retire and winning the World Cup for India is still one of his agendas. The 36-year-old, who led the Indian cricket team beautifully in the World Cup 2023 before unfortunately losing the final, said he is batting well and plans to continue for a few more years.

Rohit Sharma plans to fulfil his long-standing dream of winning the World Cup, and also give a shot at winning the World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2025 (if India qualifies). The stylish opener also asserted that the 50-over World Cup is the "actual World Cup" for him.

"I haven't really thought about retirement. But, I don't know where life takes you. I am still playing well at this point in time - so I am thinking I am going to continue for a few more years and then, I don't know. I really want to win the World Cup and there is a WTC final in 2025, hopefully India makes it," Rohit Sharma said while talking to Ed Sheeran and Gaurav Kapur on a special edition of Breakfast with Champions.

Rohit Sharma also opened up on the defeat against Australia in the 2023 World Cup final. The Mumbai batter said he was almost sure of winning the trophy as his team ticked all the boxes and won each of the games to qualify for the November 19 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

"50-over World Cup for me is the actual world cup. We've grown up watching that World Cup. More importantly, it was happening in India in front of our home crowd. We played so well up until that final. When we won the semi-finals, I thought, now we're just a step away. We're doing all the things right," Rohit said.

"What's the one thing that can make us lose the World Cup? Not a single thing came to my mind. Because I thought we ticked all the boxes, we were playing good cricket. Confidence was there.

"We were all supposed to have one bad day and that I guess that was our bad day. Don't think we played bad cricket in that final, certain things didn't go our way. But Australia were slightly better than us," Rohit added.

Rohit Sharma will be leading India in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the USA. The WTC final will be held next year. India are currently leading the nine-team points table after winning six of their nine games. The next ODI World Cup will be held in 2027 in South Africa. Rohit Sharma will be 40-year-old then.
