Royal Challengers Bangalore's new head coach Andy Flower vows to take RCB to new heights

Former Zimbabwe cricketer Andy Flower has vowed to take IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to newer heights after taking over as the head coach of the franchise, which has decided to revamp the existing coaching set-up.

The Bangalore-based franchise - which is one of the most popular T20 teams in the world - on Friday (August 4) confirmed it is not renewing the contracts of Director of Cricket Operations Mike Hesson and Head Coach Sanjay Bangar. The decision was taken after the internal review that the team concluded post the end of the IPL 2023 season, where the franchise finished sixth with seven wins and as many defeats in the league stage. The franchise thanked both, Hesson and Bangar, for all their efforts during their time with RCB for the last four seasons.

RCB Head Coach Andy Flower Statement

After his appointment, the legendary wicketkeeper-batter from Zimbabwe said it is an honour to represent such a big franchise, that has a passionate fanbase. He even said that he's looking forward to experiencing the electrifying vibes at M Chinnaswamy Stadium from the home team's dugout.

"I am really proud to be joining RCB. I'm truly honoured to represent a franchise of their size, reputation and standing. RCB have an unrivalled fan following and I can't wait to fully experience the atmosphere in the Chinnaswamy next season," the 55-year-old said in a statement.

The former England men's team coach, Flower, also acknowledged the services of Hesson and Bangar and promised to take the franchise to newer heights. RCB have never lifted the IPL trophy despite heading into the season as favourites.

"I recognise the work put in by Mike Hesson and Sanjay Bangar, who are two coaches I respect, and I look forward to the challenge of taking RCB to new heights. I'm particularly excited to be reunited with Faf. We have worked very well together in the past and I look forward to forging our partnership and relationship into something bigger and better," he added further.

"We have an exciting roster of players to work with, and I recognise and will relish both the amazing opportunity with RCB but also the responsibility that comes with the role. It is a great challenge, and I can't wait to get started," said Andy.

After the appointment of Andy Flower as the new boss of the RCB, Rajesh V Menon, Vice President & Head of the franchise termed the former as one of the best coaches in the game currently and welcomed him into the RCB family.

"Andy is one of the best coaches in the game today. He has inspired players in leagues across the world. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome him to Royal Challengers Bangalore. His track record of success is ideal to take RCB forward," Menon said.
