Sanju Samson's tactic leaves Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly fuming during RR vs DC IPL 2024 Match 9

Sanju Samson's move to substitute Rovman Powell in the field triggered Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Ricky Ponting, and Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly in their match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Thursday, March 28.

After the second ball of the first over during Delhi Capitals' innings, Samson signalled Rovam Powell to walk in for Shubham Dubey in the field. Notably, both Powell and Dubey were in the substitute players' list given by captain Samson before the start of the match.

Ricky Ponting observed the development from the dug out and raised doubts immediately. He was seen having an animated chat with one of the off-field match officials, asking why Rajasthan Royals were having four overseas players on the field, when they originally named just three in the playing eleven.

Jos Buttler, Shimron Hetmyer, and Trent Boult were the three overseas players originally named in the Rajasthan Royals (RR) playing eleven vs Delhi Capitals. Pacer Nandre Burger replaced Hetmyer as an Impact Substitute as Rajasthan set a 186-run target for Delhi.

Delhi's Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly also jumped in the conversation as the match official took out the team sheet to explain the situation. A maximum of four overseas players are allowed to participate in an IPL match, and no more than four overseas players can field at once.

Sanju Samson's Rajasthan Royals were well within their rights to deploy Rovam Powell in the field. Powell did not bowl or bat in the match which Rajasthan managed to win by 12 runs.

Impact substitute Nandre Burger picked two wickets for 29 runs in three overs. Trent Boult gave away 29 runs without taking any wickets in three overs. Jos Buttler scored 11 runs in the match, while Shimron Hetmyer chipped in with 14 unbeaten runs off seven balls.
