Selectors face tough task: Who will fill MS Dhoni's shoes in ODIs,T20Is?

New Delhi, Sep 25: The new selection committee appointed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) faces a challenging task of finding a who will fill in the shoes of India's most successful wicket-keeper batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni's shoes, once he opts to hang up his boots.

MS Dhoni, India's limited overs' captain, has been India's irreplaceble player over the last decade and emerged as team's most successful glovesman in every format of the game.

Selectors face daunting task of finding MS Dhoni's replacement in ODI, T20Is

While, stumper Wriddhiman Saha has taken up the job for India in Tests after Dhoni retired from longer format of the game, but finding the Ranchi-lad's replacement in ODIs and T20Is is not going to be an easy task for the selectors, given the benchmarks and keeping standards set by the most successful man behind stumps across all formats in Indian cricket.

Dhoni's performance with the bat has also been a force to reckon and that's what makes the search for his successor more challenging.

However, former selectors are still of the view that there is still a lot of cricket left in him. But the biggest concern for the selectors is lack of wicketkeeping resources in the country due to the high standards set by Dhoni.

According to former selector Saba Karim, who was the selector from the East Zone for four years, young KL Rahul looks to be the best bet for India in the shorter formats of the game.

"There is a problem with the resources, especially in wicketkeeping. Wriddhiman Saha is just growing into his job in Tests. But in limited-overs, Rahul looks good to don the gloves. His glovework has potential but a lot of work has to be done with wicketkeepers. At the moment, Dhoni is doing pretty well," Karim was quoted as saying.

"One generation of wicketkeepers was lost with Dhoni playing for so long," Vikram Rathore, another former selector, stated.

"These days the youngsters like Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant are better batsmen than wicketkeepers. As far as Dhoni is concerned, age shouldn't be a factor. We brought back Ashish Nehra too. Again, it's up to the selectors to take the call," the former India opener added.

As per a TOI report, two selectors from the last panel reiterated that Dhoni's captaincy had nothing to do with his place in the team.

"I don't know why and how this perception has come up that Dhoni can't be a part of the team if he doesn't have his captaincy. His fitness levels have certainly gone up. However, it's up to the present selectors now to decide if they want him in their scheme of things looking at the World Cup in 2019. The current selectors need to have a vision," Saba Karim added further.
