New Delhi, Sep 1: Pacer Shardul Thakur made his debut for India in the fourth one-day international match against Sri Lanka. The Mumbai speedster has been a part of the Indian squad for the last one year but received the India cap on before the ODI at Colombo.
Cricket experts were happy to see yet another talented pacer getting an opportunity to showcase his talent and empower India's pace battery.
However, several fans were irked to have seen Thakur sporting the iconic Jersey No. 10, which has been synonymous with legendary Sachin Tendulkar in Indian cricket.
Tendulkar sported jersey No. 10 for as long as he played cricket, post his retirement from ODIs and subsequently from competitive cricket it was assumed that the BCCI might have also retired jersey No. 10 in the honour of the Master Blaster.
Even the commentators present in the commentary box were taken aback when they saw the pacer taking his run up to bowl his very first over.
Shardul, however, had a decent performance in his debut match as the speedster got a wicket in his second over of the match and bowled at some good line and length. He also impressed the commentators with his pace and bounce with the white ball.
Later, when he was asked about the reason behind sporting 'jersey no. 10' the pacer revealed that his birth no. is 10. The Mumbaikar further added that the initials of his name are also 'ST' - which is the abbreviation for the 'god of cricket' too.
Interestingly, Thakur also wore same number jersey in the IPL for his franchise Rising Pune Supergiant.
But the sight of Shardul Thakur, carrying the prestigious 'No. 10' on his jersey, didn't go down well with several Indian cricket fans.
Here's how they slammed the debutant on Twitter:
Not everyone was miffed with Shardul:
