Young India batter Shubman Gill missed out on a well-deserved maiden century in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 after getting dismissed in the nervous 90s against Sri Lanka at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on Thursday (November 2).
Gill - who has been going through a rich vein of form in the year 2023 - slammed his second fifty of the competition and played a vital knock of 92 off 92 deliveries before gifting his wicket away.

The 23-year-old talented cricketer from Punjab has had a watershed year in 2023 and has been scoring runs with utmost ease in the white-ball format. The right-handed batter - who didn't get the best of starts in the ten-team showpiece event - was looking set for his career's seventh ODI century.
But he was dismissed while playing a loose shot as he tried to play a lap shot against Sri Lankan pacer Dilshan Madushanka and was caught behind by wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis. Gill, along with senior batter Virat Kohli shared a stand of 189 runs for the second wicket.
The packed Wankhede Stadium was buzzing in anticipation of Gill's maiden World Cup century but they were stunned to see the future star missing out on yet another milestone in his career.

Gill - who has amassed 1425 runs in 25 ODIs in 2023 and was the first batter to go past the 1000-run mark in the 50-overs format - failed to slam the sixth century of this year.
The youngster, however, received a standing ovation from a packed crowd at Wankhede Stadium. While the crowd was applauding the youngster for playing a fine knock against Sri Lankans, the camera panned towards the stands where cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar's daughter Sara Tendulkar was also sitting.
The camera caught Sara's reaction as she was equally shocked by Shubman's untimely dismissal. Sara - who is a rumoured girlfriend of Gill and the duo were recently spotted together at a mall in Mumbai - even joined the others in the stadium to give a standing ovation to the Punjab cricketer.
