Updated Shubman Gill Last 10 Test Innings: 47, 17, 4, 20, 110, 20, 7, 21, 5, 128 (Till 1st innings of the 4th Test against Australia in Ahmedabad)

Young India cricketer Shubman Gill stepped into the playing eleven with a lot of promise in the third Test against Australia in Indore. The talented batter kept the disappointments of the previous game behind and went on notching up a brilliant century in the first innings in Ahmedabad.

Shubman Gill slams 2nd Test Century

After Australia posted a massive 480 in their first innings after their captain Steve Smith elected to bat first in Ahmedabad, Indian batters faced an uphill task of bridging the gap.

Gill along with captain Rohit Sharma gave the hosts a sound start but their partnership only lasted for 73 runs, when the latter was dismissed for 35. Gill was then joined by Cheteshwar Pujara and the duo shared a century stand for the second wicket and frustrated Australian bowlers.

Gill, meanwhile, mixed aggression with caution and constructed his innings superbly and notched up a fifty and later converted it into his second Test hundred. He hit a boundary off Todd Murphy to get to the triple-figure mark and celebrated with a smile on his face, which also had a sense of relief as the 23-year-old made his presence felt.

He thus became the fourth Indian to score a century in all the 3 formats in a calendar year. He was eventually dismissed for 128 runs in that innings.

Gill replaced out-of-form KL Rahul in 3rd IND vs AUS Test

The talented India cricketer - who has been going through a rich vein of form with the bat in the white ball format in the year 2023 - replaced out-of-form KL Rahul in the playing eleven in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023.

The right-handed batter from Punjab opened the batting for the hosts along with skipper Rohit Sharma. He, however, failed to make an impression in both innings of the match, which is part of the World Test Championship 2021-23.

Indians were hoping for a bright start from the opening duo of Gill and Sharma in Indore after the skipper won the toss and elected to bat first. It was the first time in the series that Rohit won the toss in BGT 2023.

Both Rohit and Shubman failed to make a mark with the bat in both innings of the game as they perished cheaply against a quality Australia spin bowling attack.

Gill scored 21 off 18 balls in the first innings of the Test before being caught by Steve Smith off left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann. The right-hander also smashed three fours in his knock but failed to capitalise upon the positive start on a track where batting wasn't easy.

With openers failing to give their team a steady start, the hosts were bundled out for a paltry 109 in the first innings as Kuhnemann, playing his second Test, grabbed a five-for.

In response, Australia scored 197 in the second innings as opener Usman Khawaja scored a vital 60 off 147 balls and took a crucial 87-run lead.

Team India hoped for a better show with the bat from the openers in the second innings on a rank-turner at Holkar Stadium. Gill disappointed with the bat in the second innings as well and departed cheaply for 5.

The right-hander charged down the ground to play a big shot over mid-on off Nathan Lyon but missed the ball completely to get clean bowled. He faced just 15 deliveries during his stay in the middle.
