Commentary
On to the next one - Pheww! That was an exhilarating contest and no one had any time to breathe. The weekend has kicked up into high gear, and we now move on to the second game of the day. The Salem Spartans have won the toss against Trichy Grand Cholas and have elected to BAT first. You can simply switch tabs and catch our coverage of that game. Cheers!
Player of the Match - As expected, NS Chaturved gets the award for his astounding and match-winning knock of 121 off just 47 balls. Chaturved says that definitely today was a day when everything struck the middle of the bat, and he would like to dedicate this award to his dad. On being relieved of the captaincy pressure, he says that it is what the coaching staff and a few of his friends wanted him to do, and he can now play a bit more freely.
The Presentation ceremony...
Record broken - Earlier in the game, Lyca Kovai Kings broke the record for the highest total in TNPL history, but now Siechem Madurai Panthers have gone on to chase 240 runs and have the record to their name. The Panthers didn't have the best of starts as they lost a wicket early, but then came the storm by the name of NS Chaturved. 121 off just 47 balls and that set the platform for the win. Kovai did come back thanks to a double whammy from leg spinner Jhathavedh Subramanyan. In the end, a cameo from Atheeq Rahman and an unbeaten 37 off just 19 balls from skipper B Anirudh Sita Ram meant that Madurai got over the line with 3 balls to spare.
Madurai one-up Kovai - Scenes of elation out there in the middle as Siechem Madurai Panthers get over the line with a couple of balls to spare. One of the greatest chases in TNPL history and these two teams have made history in terms of the runs scored. Fittingly, it was skipper B Anirudh Sita Ram who actually hit the winning run off a No Ball. Heartbreak for the Kovai Kings, who will be baffled as to how they have made 239 and still lost.
Excellent yorker, but it doesn't matter now. Full and straight, in the blockhole. B Anirudh Sita Ram gets an inside edge onto the pads and the ball rolls into the off side. The batters sneak in a quick single. And would you believe it? R.S. Ambrish has also overstepped. A No Ball is called and that will be that. Siechem Madurai Panthers gun down a target of 240 and win by 6 wickets.
SIX! That should be the telling blow. Not the best of balls with fine leg inside the ring, but that's composure personified from skipper B Anirudh Sita Ram. Shortish length on leg, sliding in. Anirudh gets inside the line and flicks it down to fine leg for a maximum. Just 2 needed now off 3 balls.
2 runs, the pull shot comes into play. Two runs taken.
SIX! That's a big change in momentum on the first ball. Slower one, dug in short over middle. B Anirudh Sita Ram picks it early and swings it away over deep square leg for a biggie. 10 needed now off 5 balls.
Who will bowl the final over? Will SRK back himself? No, it will be the pace of R.S. Ambrish to close out the game. He's gone for 32 so far in his 2 overs.
Excellent bowling, but that's a bit sluggish from Shahrukh Khan in the field. Yorker-length delivery around off, Singh drills it wide of long off for a single. However, the batters hustle for two and Khan realizes that late, throwing it towards the keeper, but Singh makes it through. 16 needed off the final over.
2 runs, that is lofted away for a couple.
The fielder doesn't even attempt the catch. Was that a smart thing to do? Banged in well short and outside off, Gurjapneet Singh lays into it and hits it high over mid on. Andre Siddarth runs back over his head and just lets the ball bounce in front of him. It plugs and he cuts it off, as the batters get two runs.
Gurjapneet Singh walks in at number 6.
OUT! CAUGHT! G Kishoor has been excellent at the death and there's another twist in this game. Kishoor hits the deck hard, bowling it around off. Atheeq Rahman takes it on but plays a rather tired lofted shot, hitting it straight down the throat of the long off fielder. Shahrukh Khan makes no mistake and Madurai lose their fourth wicket. 22 needed now off 9 balls.
The straight yorker, bowled to perfection and the batter has just blocked that from the crease.
1 run, that is just a mere push for a run.
FOUR! Quicker one, on a length on middle and leg. Rahman thumps it back over the bowler's head and beats the long on fielder to his right. 23 needed now off 12 balls.
DROPPED AND FOUR! You simply cannot drop that, especially at this stage of the game. Flighted up from over the wicket, darted across off. Atheeq Rahman swings and gets an outside edge. The ball lobs to the right of short third where K Deeban Lingesh dives across and spills it right through the hands, conceding a boundary.
A bit of cat and mouse between the two skippers. B Anirudh Sita Ram moves around in his crease and moves to the off side for the reverse sweep. Shahrukh Khan tries to follow him but bowls a full toss around the thighs. Anirudh miscues it towards gully for a single, but the ball also flicked the grill of the helmet and a concussion check will now follow.
