Welcome back for Salem's reply. B Anirudh Sita Ram and his men disperse from the huddle and take the field. It will be the left-hand, right-hand combination of Hari Nishaanth and R Kavin to open the innings for the Spartans. What stood out in the first innings was that the quicker you bowl, the quicker the ball travels off the bat. Madurai will be aware of that as they look to defend this total and keep their winning run intact. Gurjapneet Singh will open the attack. Here we go...

Salem have work to do - Despite losing wickets, Madurai never took their foot off the pedal and kept going. Contributions from Atheeq Rahman and P Saravanan had set up the finish, but neither could stay there until the end. Salem, for their part, executed their death bowling well to ensure Madurai did not get the big finish they would have wanted. They have not had the best of times with the bat so far this season, and will have to bat well to register their first win. Stay tuned as the chase is coming up shortly.
End of an entertaining first innings - Just 12 runs came off the last two overs, and SKM Salem Spartans will be happy with the way they finished and with having kept Madurai under 200. Earlier, after being asked to bat first, Ram Kumar came out swinging and made the powerplay count for his side. Salem fought back through the middle phase, but Siddharth Mahadevan held things together for his side with a half-century.
OUT! DEEPESH IS RUN OUT! A wicket to end the innings. Siechem Madurai Panthers finish with 195/8. Another well-disguised off-cutter by M Poiyamozhi, around off. Rajalingam S hangs back and has a heave across the line but is beaten on the inside edge. It dribbles behind towards the keeper, R Kavin, who collects it neatly and scores a direct hit at the bowling end with an underarm throw. D. Deepesh is found well short of his ground.
Two wides! Dug in short by M Poiyamozhi, too high, on middle. D. Deepesh does not manage to connect with the pull as the ball sails over his blade. The batters sneak in a bye as the ball goes to the left of the keeper. R Kavin lobs it towards the bowler and Deepesh is struggling to make his ground but he fails to gather the ball cleanly on the first attempt and the run is completed.
So far, so good by M Poiyamozhi. Bowled by going wide on the crease, on a length, flirting with the tramline. Deepesh hangs deep in the crease and swings with all his might but is undone by the slowness of the ball.
Was that above the waist? M Poiyamozhi gets the slower yorker wrong this time as it comes out as a high full toss, on off. Rajalingam S is early on the pull and the ball grazes the toe end before going behind towards short third. They cross. Rajalingam wants to check the height of the ball and sends it upstairs. The Ball Tracking confirms that the ball was dipping on the batter and is below the waist. So it is a fair delivery.
Nicely executed. It is the loopy, dipping off-cutter, on off. The ball drops on Rajalingam S who can't lay bat to ball.
A big swing and a miss. Near the tramline on off, keeping it away from the batter's hitting arc. Rajalingam S does not pick the off-cutter and swings way too early.
Dishes out the off-cutter, on a good length, outside off. It spins back a touch. D. Deepesh clears the front leg and swings at it. Gets an inside edge and it goes behind towards the keeper on the bounce. The keeper does well to get his body behind the ball and make the stop but cannot prevent the batters from taking the single.
Time for the final over. M Poiyamozhi will close out the innings. Can Salem keep Madurai under 200?

OUT! CAUGHT! High but not long enough. Bowled on a length, outside off. Atheeq Rahman hangs deep in the crease and gets low to get under the ball. He tries to launch it down the ground but ends up slicing it high in the air towards long on, where Nidhish Rajagopal settles under it and makes no mistake.
Full and speared in at the pads. Rajalingam S whips it to deep mid-wicket for one.
Nails the yorker, outside off. Rajalingam S walks across but fails to squeeze it out.
Pushes the length up now, on off. Rajalingam S has a big swing at it but slices it off the outer half behind point. Rahil Shah gets around in the deep but does not attack the ball and hangs back to read the spin of the ball. That allows the batters to hustle back for the second run.
FOUR! Have some of that, says Rajalingam S. Across from around the wicket, on the shorter side. That in-between length and Rajalingam climbs all over it. Spanks it down the ground and the long on fielder stands no chance.

SIX! From around the wicket, pace taken off, on a nagging length, on the off stump. It does not rise much, but Atheeq Rahman adjusts well before pulling it over mid-wicket for a six. Another productive over for Siechem Madurai Panthers, 17 runs off it.

FOUR! Hit with absolute authority. On a short of a length, around the off pole. Stand and deliver stuff from Rajalingam S, who stands tall on top of the bounce and powers it back past the bowler for a four.
FIVE WIDES! Full and sprayed down leg. Rajalingam S is beaten for pace on the tickle. The keeper, R Kavin dives to his left and gets a glove on it but it is not enough as the ball races away.

OUT! CAUGHT! M Poiyamozhi strikes on his return to the attack. Another off-cutter, closer to the off stump this time, on a good length. Singh clears the front leg and has a heave across the line. He does so early and gets it right off the bottom half of the blade. Holes out to deep mid-wicket, where Rajendran Vivek bends and gobbles it up with his fingers pointing upwards.

Signing off - With this win, Siechem Madurai Panthers climb to the top of the table and are the only unbeaten side in the competition, while SKM Salem Spartans remain the only winless team, with their net run rate taking another hit with this defeat. Recap of the first innings - Madurai, after being asked to bat first, found contributions at the top from Ram Kumar and Siddharth Mahadevan, with the latter going on to reach a well-made half-century. They continued to take the game on even as wickets fell through the middle phase, but Rajendran Vivek and M Poiyamozhi closed the innings out really well for Salem, keeping Madurai under 200 after they had looked set to go well beyond that mark.
Chase never took off - Three of Salem's top four batters got starts, but none managed to convert them into a substantial score. They could not find the momentum they needed in the Powerplay and could not make up the ground in the middle phase either. In fact, that was where Madurai's spinners really put the brakes on Salem's chase, with leg-spinner Rohan Bhutra leading the charge. The required run rate simply continued to climb as the boundaries dried up. Towards the end, contributions from M Mohammed and Rajendran Vivek only reduced the margin of defeat more than anything else.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - On his TNPL debut, Rohan Bhutra wins the award for his brilliance with the ball, finishing with figures of 2/9 from his 4 overs. Feels great to perform on debut and is grateful to the management for the opportunity. Admits he was nervous at first, but once the ball came into his hand, he focused on his bowling and settled in. Rohan also speaks about learning from the likes of Varun Chakravarthy and Rashid Khan, picking up the importance of top-spin and over-spin from Varun, while Rashid has taught him how to vary his pace.
Three in three for Madurai - A side that finished at the bottom last year, the start to this season continues to get better for the Panthers. It did feel like they left a few runs out there after their innings lacked the finishing flourish they would have wanted, but their bowlers made sure the total on the board was more than enough. A third straight defeat for SKM Salem Spartans, who never really threatened to pull off the chase on the night.

Oh, that could have gone anywhere. Gurjapneet Singh bowls the bumper around the right shoulder. M Poiyamozhi tries to take on the short ball but the ball gets big on him. It catches the splice of the bat and drops beside the strip on the off side. Single taken.

OUT! TAKEN! The fireworks from M Mohammed are over. He will be disappointed with himself for not managing to put this away. In his attempt to get the yorker, D. Deepesh ends up with a full toss on middle. Mohammed hangs deep and tries to heave it away on the leg side but is rushed on the shot. Gets no timing whatsoever on the shot, and it is spooned to deep mid-wicket, where Rajalingam S takes the catch.

Vivek clears the front leg but cannot quite get under it. As a result, neither does he get the distance nor the elevation. Hits it flat towards long on, where P Saravanan moves to his right and takes the catch at waist height.
FOUR! Thrashed away. Deepesh goes searching for the yorker but ends up dishing out a low full toss on the off stump. Vivek hangs back and smacks it back past the bowler. The long off fielder stands no chance.

Edged away. Gurjapneet Singh shifts his line of attack to the stumps with a full ball. Vivek clears the front leg and has a swipe across the line. Gets an outside edge and it lands on the bounce to short third. Just a single.

Since Vivek had moved across the off side, the guideline moves with him and the replays confirm that the ball was within the revised guideline, so it is a fair delivery.
SIX! Incredible shot. On the fuller side, pushed across the right-hander from over the wicket. Vivek hangs deep in the crease and reaches out to carve it over cover. D. Deepesh gets around to his right but the ball stays out of his reach and goes all the way for a six.
