Centurion, Feb 5: Injury woes don't just seem to leave South African cricket team which is already trailing by 2-0 against India in the ongoing ODI series at home.
They were already being rendered vulnerable in the absence of skipper Faf du Plessis and veteran AB de Villiers and now team's wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock has also been ruled out of the ongoing series due to left wrist injury.
As per a release by Cricket South Africa, De Kock sustained the injury during the second ODI against India on Sunday in Centurion and will require 2-4 weeks to make a recovery. This means the left-handed batsman is going to miss the remainder of the ODI series and upcoming T20I series against India.
Proteas team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee explained the injury: "Quinton suffered an extreme blow to the left wrist while batting in the second ODI on Sunday and felt severe pain and discomfort. Further investigation revealed severe bony bruising to the area, with associated swelling around the tendon in the wrist."
"This type of injury will require between 2-4 weeks to heal, which subsequently rules him out of the remainder of the ODI and T20 series against India. The Cricket South Africa medical team will aim to have him ready for the Test series against Australia starting next month."
The selectors will not name a replacement for De Kock in the squad.
De Kock has been struggling with form all through the India series. He couldn't do any damage in the Test series and story wasn't any different in the first two ODIs.
Heinrich Klaasen, who was added to the Protea ODI squad as cover for the injured skipper ahead of the second ODI, will be donning the gloves for South Africa. The 26-year-old Klaasen is yet to make his international debut but he has been in sparkling form of late.
