Hobart Test: South Africa humiliate Australia by innings and 80 runs, clinch series

Hobart, Nov 15: Adding insult to the injury to an embattled Australian side, visitors South Africa on Tuesday (Nov 15) defeated hosts by an innings and 80 runs in the second cricket Test at the Bellerive Oval here.

Pacer Kyle Abbott, who was inducted into the side to replace injured Dale Steyn, took a match haul of 9 for 118 to seal Proteas' third consecutive series win in Australia.

Abbott, who was adjuged man of the match for his figures in the match, claimed six wickets in the second innings demolished the Australian top order. He got the desired support from the other end by young Kagiso Rabada, who claimed the remaining four wickets.

Trailing by 241 runs in second innings, after they were all out for 85 in the first innings, Australia were bundled out at 161 in 60.1 overs as the match finished on the fourth day itself. However, the second day was washed out due to rain.

Usman Khawaja (64), David Warner (45) and Steve Smith (31) were the only batsmen who could cross the double-digit mark in the second innings.

Earlier on Monday, Australia scored 121/2 in their second innings, trailing by 120 runs, after bowling out South Africa for 326 on the third day.

Usman Khawaja (56) and skipper Steven Smith (18) were at the crease when the umpires uprooted the stumps at the end of the day's play.

Stumper Quinton de Kock (104) slammed a brilliant century to take the visitors out of trouble before pacer Josh Hazlewood (6/89) ran through the lower order to restrict the South Africans to 326.

De Kock and Temba Bavuma batted South Africa into a position of strength with a century stand for the sixth wicket and a 203-run lead to put even more pressure on Steve Smith's embattled team.
