Sri Lanka Win Hearts Despite Loss as Pakistan’s Familiar-Conditions Advantage Ends in Another T20 World Cup Exit

By MyKhel Staff

Colombo, Feb 28: Pakistan signed off their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a nervy win over Sri Lanka on Saturday (February 28), but the result only confirmed their elimination rather than keeping their semi-final hopes alive.

Chasing a mammoth target of 213, co-hosts Sri Lanka showed great deal of grit and determination in the death overs to come very close to the finish line, as they reached 207/6 in the stipulated 20 overs, to lose the game by a margin of 5 runs. Having already eliminated Pakistan by going past the required 147-run mark, Sri Lanka gave the Men in Green a major scare.

Sri Lanka Win Hearts Despite Loss as Pakistan s Familiar-Conditions Advantage Ends in Another T20 World Cup Exit

Win for Pakistan in a nail-biting thriller, but it wasn't enough

Pakistan's victory over Sri Lanka came in dramatic fashion, with Shaheen Afridi holding his nerve in a suffocating final over. The match boiled down to a gripping duel between Afridi and Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka, who nearly pulled off a stunning chase.

Having already hit a four and three consecutive sixes off Afridi, Shanaka needed boundaries off the final deliveries and even left a low full toss expecting it to be called wide. However, umpire Rod Tucker ruled it a legal delivery, effectively ending Sri Lanka's hopes and handing Pakistan a narrow win. The Sri Lankan dugout, including Sanath Jayasuriya, was visibly frustrated by the decision, with animated discussions following the non-call.

Sri Lanka's Fighting Spirit

Despite the heartbreak, Sri Lanka won widespread admiration for their resilience. Shanaka carried the chase almost single-handedly and acknowledged the crowd before and after the final over, embodying the spirit of the contest.

After the match, Dunith Wellalage consoled Shanaka, while Shaheen Afridi walked up to shake hands, acknowledging the fight shown by the Sri Lankan skipper. The scenes reflected a contest decided by the finest margins rather than a one-sided finish.

Pakistan's Familiar Conditions Fail to Deliver Knockout Berth

Pakistan's campaign ended in disappointment despite the advantage of playing all their matches in Sri Lanka under the hybrid model, a situation that allowed them to avoid travel and build a squad tailored to local conditions.

With a spin-heavy bowling attack and the inclusion of the unorthodox Usman Tariq, the team appeared strategically aligned with the surfaces. However, inconsistent batting displays and missed opportunities earlier in the Super Eight stage meant their fate was no longer in their own hands by the time they faced Sri Lanka.

A Win That Came Too Late

The victory over Sri Lanka provided only statistical consolation. Pakistan managed to hold their nerve in a tense finish, but earlier setbacks had already pushed them to the brink of elimination. Instead of controlling qualification through results, they were left relying on permutations, turning their final game into a must-win encounter that ultimately carried no pathway to the semi-finals.

Sri Lanka Win Respect in Defeat

Despite the heartbreak, Sri Lanka's response reflected composure and sportsmanship. Dunith Wellalage consoled Shanaka immediately, while the Sri Lankan captain acknowledged the crowd before leaving the field. Shaheen Afridi's gesture of walking across to shake hands further highlighted the mutual respect between the sides. Sri Lanka's fighting display reinforced their reputation as a competitive T20 unit capable of pushing stronger teams deep.

Questions Linger Over Pakistan's Campaign

Pakistan's exit will renew scrutiny over their team balance and approach in global tournaments. Familiar conditions, tactical planning around spin, and a settled base did not translate into consistent performances. Another early departure from a T20 World Cup underlines the need for greater batting stability and clarity of roles if they are to convert potential advantages into tangible success.
