Pulling off a major upset in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2022, Ireland have defeated England by 5 runs (via Duckworth Lewis-Stern method) at the Melbourne Cricket Stadium (MCG) on Wednesday (October 26).

The match between the neighbours had a delayed start in Melbourne due to rain and was halted again in the English innings batting. In response to Ireland's 157, the Jos Buttler-led side reached 105/5 in 14.3 overs when it started pouring again. The English were 5 runs behind by then and the Irish were declared winners via DLS.

Having posted a decent 157 in 19.2 overs, Ireland bowlers put up a stellar show in the second innings and never gave England batters a leeway in the run chase. The Irish bowlers kept picking up wickets at regular intervals on a surface where the ball was skidding due to the rain.

Irish skipper Andrew Balbirnie led his team from the front in the batting and scored 62 off 47 deliveries. It was the 82-run stand between Balbirnie and Lorcan Tucker (34) which laid a solid platform for the Irish side as they managed to go past 150-plus despite a late batting collapse.

England kept losing wickets at regular intervals in the run chase which cost them dearly. None of the English batters looked at ease in the run chase and they were five down for 86.

With the heavyweights such as Australia, England, and New Zealand competing alongside Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Ireland for the top-two finish, the result of the England-Ireland contest makes this group interesting for it has been already been dubbed the 'Group of Death.'

Let's take a look at what are the qualification scenarios for all five teams in Group 1:

New Zealand:

New Zealand:

Match: 4; Won: 2; Lost: 1; No-Result: 1; Points: 5; NRR: +2.233

NZ vs AUS - NZ Won

The Kane Williamson-led side kicked off the tournament on a dominant note when they vanquished hosts Australia in the opener. The runners-up from the previous edition look like a team to beat going forward.

NZ vs AFG - Abandoned

Rain forced the points between New Zealand and Afghanistan to split and it comes as a setback to both teams.

NZ vs SL - NZ won

But the Kiwis came back strongly in the match against Sri Lanka to secure a massive 65-run win to bag two crucial points and put themselves in the driver's seat in the group.

NZ vs ENG - ENG won

England kept their semi-final hopes alive with a 30-run win over New Zealand in their fourth league game of the Super 12 stage.

A win against England would have taken the Blackcaps to the final but now they'll have to win their last league game. With a win over Ireland, they'll have 7 points and easily qualify for the semis. If they lose, NZ are out for Australia and England will then qualify, should they win their last games.

England:

England:

Match: 4; Won: 2; Lost: 1; No-Result: 1; Points: 3; NRR: +0.547

Vs AFG - England won

The Jos Buttler-led side started the Super 12 stage on a confident note with a win over Afghanistan by 5 wickets. Their batters were tested by Afghan bowlers in the opening game but England's bowlers sent a stern message to the opponents in the upcoming games as they lived up to the favourites tag. However, the English were stunned by neighbours Ireland in the second game.

VS AUS - washed out

Their match against Australia getting washed out means Jos Buttler & Co. find themselves in a tricky position.

VS IRE - Ireland won

The Men in Red were shocked by Ireland in the next game by 5 runs via DLS and brought their campaign off the track.

VS NZ - England won

Leading from the front, Jos Buttler slammed a brilliant fifty and helped England post a respectable total at the Gabba and bowlers restricted New Zealand to 159/6 and won the match by 20 runs.

They've kept their hopes alive and to qualify for the semis, the English will have to beat Sri Lanka in their next game and hope Australia's net run rate remains less than theirs.

Australia:

Australia:

Matches: 4; Won: 2; Lost: 1; No-Result: 1; Points: 5; NRR: -0.304

The defending champions were billed as favourites coming into the tournament due to the form they were in and also due to the advantage of playing at home.

Aus vs NZ - loss

The Aaron Finch-led side suffered a humiliating 89-run defeat against Trans-Tasman neighbours New Zealand in the opening game.

AUS vs SL - Australia won

However, they came back strongly in the second group match to beat Sri Lanka by 7 wickets.

AUS vs ENG - Abandoned

Their biggest match of the Super 12, against England, was washed out and points were split.

AUS vs IRE - Australia won by 42 runs

In their next game against Ireland, Aaron Finch & his band registered a comprehensive win and kept their hopes alive.

With two wins, one defeat and one game ending in a no-result, Australians currently possess 5 points and are placed second in the points table.

For the Aussies to qualify for the semi-finals, they will need to win all their last league game and hope New Zealand & England lose their remaining game.

Sri Lanka:

Sri Lanka:

Match: 4; Won: 2; Lost: 2; No-Result: 0; Points: 2; NRR: -0.457

The Asia Cup winners started the Super 12 stage with an emphatic 9-wicket thrashing of Ireland. However, the Lankan Lions suffered a massive 7-wicket loss at the hands of Australia in their next encounter.

The biggest setback for Sri Lanka in the match against the Aussies was the way their key spinners were taken to the cleaners. Both Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga went for runs as Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis took them on remand.

The Sri Lankans suffered a huge defeat at the hands of New Zealand and their net run rate plunged further. They, however, have kept their hopes alive with a win over Afghanistan by getting two crucial points.

The Dasun Shanaka-led side currently finds itself at the third spot now. For them to qualify for the semis, the Sri Lankans will have to take their game to the next level for they face a tough opponent in England in the last league game.

At this stage, Sri Lanka should be aiming to secure the remaining two points and then see what fate holds for them for their qualification hopes rely on the result of New Zealand and Australia matches.

Afghanistan:

Afghanistan:

Match: 4; Won: 0; Lost: 2; No-Result: 2; Points: 2; NRR: -0.620

The Afghans suffered a 5-wicket defeat against England in the opening game of the Super 12 stage and their next two games against New Zealand and Ireland were abandoned due to rain, resulting in sharing of points. The Afghans have only two points as they lost to Sri Lanka in their fourth league match,

With this defeat, the Mohammad Nabi-led side has officially been knocked out of the Super 12 stage and became the second team from Group 1 to miss out on the semi-final qualification.

Ireland:

Ireland:

Match: 4; Won: 1; Lost: 2; No-Result: 1; Points: 3; NRR: -1.544

Ireland qualified for the Super 12 stage on the back of a superlative performance in round one. However, the Andrew Balbirnie-led side was off to a dismal start in round two with a nine-wicket loss against Sri Lanka.

They, however, pulled off a major upset when they defeated England by 5 runs (via DLS). Their next game against Afghanistan was abandoned and points were shared. Australia defeated them convincingly in the next match and ended their semi-final hopes.

They have 3 points in four games and are mathematically out of contention for the semi-finals.
