T20 World Cup 2024: Amidst Criticism Of USA Pitches, Netherlands Coach Ryan Cook Gives His Verdict

New York, June 4: After the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 kicked off, the nature of the pitches on offer in mainland USA became a hot topic. The tournament, being staged in the USA for the first time, has seen low-scoring matches, with pitches that seem placid and don't offer much to the batters.

The stadiums in the United States are using drop-in pitches, which seems to have added to the controversy. T20 WC will be played across three venues in the US i.e. Dallas, New York and Lauderhill.

Sri Lanka vs South Africa - A low-scoring affair

At the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, where Sri Lanka faced South Africa, the match turned out to be a dull encounter. Sri Lanka were bundled out for a meagre 77, and even the South African batters faced difficulties early in their chase but ended up winning it by six wickets.

Pitch criticised during India vs Bangladesh warm-up

During the warm-up match between India and Bangladesh on June 1, the Nassau County Stadium pitch showed uneven bounce and there was some swing for the seamers but overall it remained slow.

The outfield was soft and slow, a concern raised by India's head coach Rahul Dravid. Additionally, the straight boundaries were small while the square boundaries were large.

Indian fans are worried as the pitches in the USA don't promise the run fests they are used to seeing. Indian cricketers, fresh from the IPL 2024 exploits where the average score was 190, may find the low-scoring matches a stark contrast. Fans and experts are concerned about the heavy outfield and the difficulty in hitting boundaries due to the slow nature of the tracks and the lack of pace.

Ryan Cook Talks About US tracks

When MyKhel asked the Netherlands cricket team's head coach, Ryan Cook, about his opinion on the pitches in the USA, he shared a more optimistic view. "I've only looked at the one in Dallas where we are going to play the first game against Nepal. Judging by the USA and Canada game, I think there's good bounce, it has good carry, both seamers and spinners can be effective on those wickets, and if the batters get themselves in, they could score some runs," said Cook.

Cook further elaborated, "I think the outfield is a nice quick one over the boundary sizes already long squared. I think there are some certain winds and conditions that can be utilized. So yeah, I think there's gonna have to be a good assessment of the conditions and a good adaptation needed to be able to succeed on these wickets.

"Having a look at the other games that have been played in New York and some of the warm-up games in Miami, there obviously are a couple of different nuances to each wicket. So we'll obviously be trying to do as much preparation as we can and hopefully adjust on the day depending on what we see in front of us."

Despite the criticism, Cook's positive assessment provides a glimmer of hope that teams can adapt and find success on the varied pitches in the USA. But the invariable bounce and softness in the outfield might still pose a challenge to the fielders. As the tournament progresses, it will be interesting to see how teams adjust their strategies to these unique conditions.
