Suryakmar Yadav's unbeaten half-century in a low-scoring chase after Arshdeep Singh's record-breaking spell (4/9) were the highlights as India cleared the first hurdle.

T20 World Cup 2024 India vs USA

After winning the toss, Indian captain Rohit Sharma opted to bowl first, a decision that immediately paid dividends. Arshdeep Singh's phenomenal opening oversaw the dismissal of Shayan Jahangir for a first-ball duck, followed by Andries Gous' wicket, reducing the USA to 3/2.

Arshdeep continued his devastating form, finishing with figures of 4/9 in four overs, the best by an Indian in T20 World Cup history, surpassing Ravichandran Ashwin's 4/11 against Australia in 2014.

The USA struggled to build partnerships under consistent pressure from Indian bowlers. Nitish Kumar's 27 off 23 balls was the only notable resistance. Hardik Pandya (2/14) supported Arshdeep well, picking up crucial wickets to stifle the USA innings. The USA eventually managed to post a modest total of 110/8 in their 20 overs.

The total despite its unconvincing size felt a challenge with the controversial New York pitch continue to quiz batters with its inconsistent bounce. That reflected in the chase as India faced an early setback when Saurabh Netravalkar dismissed Virat Kohli for just 1 in the first over.

Netravalkar grew bullish as he also took the wicket of Rohit Sharma, while Ali Khan got the better of Rishabh Pant, leaving India at 39/3 in the 8th over. Pant's dismissal felt like no fault of his own as the ball kept too low to hit the timber.

However, Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube steadied the innings with a crucial partnership. Suryakumar's elegant stroke play, combined with Dube's power hitting after initial hiccups ensured the total was achieved with 10 balls to spare.

One crucial moment did India a favour as inaugural champions benefited from a 5-run penalty, allowing the chase to fall under less than a run-a-ball.

India's victory means they have secured their place in the Super Eight, maintaining their unbeaten run in the tournament. This win places pressure on the USA, who now must win their final league game to have a chance of progressing.

Failure to do so will provide Pakistan with an opportunity to advance, provided they win their match against Ireland and maintain a superior net run rate.

Arshdeep Singh's spell not only set a new benchmark for Indian bowlers in T20 World Cups but also showcased India's bowling depth. With India in excellent form, they continue to be strong contenders for the title. The USA, despite their spirited efforts, will need to regroup and focus on their final league match to keep their tournament hopes alive.
