Cape Town, Apr 30: South African selectors on Tuesday (April 30) unveiled a 15-player squad for the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, slated to take place in the USA and West Indies. Additionally, the squad will include two travelling reserves for this prestigious tournament.
The South African Cricket Team, led by Aiden Markram in the tournament, has a good balance of experience and youth in the squad. Uncapped pacer Ottniel Baartman and uncapped batter Ryan Rickelton have also been included in the squad and will be getting their maiden T20I caps in the Americas.

Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Heinrich Klaasen, and David Miller - some of the proven match-winners for the Protea Men - will be forming the batting core for the side along with skipper Markram. Tristan Stubbs - who is making quite a name in the ongoing IPL 2024 for his big-hitting prowess - has also been included in the squad.
Rickelton emerged as the top run-getter in the SA20 and secured the second-highest run tally in the recently concluded CSA T20 Challenge. He is expected to form an opening partnership with Quinton de Kock in the upcoming matches. Baartman has also been rewarded for a good show in SA20.
The bowling department comprises star pacer Kagiso Rabada along with Marco Jansen, Gerald Coetzee, Nortje and Baartman. The spin attack will be led by Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi. Pacers Nandre Burger and Lungi Ngidi have been included as travelling reserves for the marquee event.
Nortje and De Kock stand out as notable additions to the Protea squad as both players were absent from Cricket South Africa's recent central contract list. Nortje has been out of international action since September 2023 due to a back injury, while De Kock retired from ODIs after the 2023 Cricket World Cup, having previously retired from Test cricket in 2022.
The Protea Men have been placed alongside Bangladesh, Nepal, Netherlands, and Sri Lanka in Group D in the marquee event which will see 20 teams competing. South Africa will kick off their campaign against Sri Lanka on 03 June at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
The last date for the announcement of the squad for the showpiece event is May 1 with India and Pakistan yet to unveil their team. The teams can make changes in the squad till May 25.
