TNPL 2017: Learnt a lot from Dhoni, Smith, Stokes, says Washington Sundar

Young offspinner Washington Sundar is keen to use the IPL experience to good effect in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL).

Bengaluru, July 27: Young offspinner Washington Sundar yesterday (July 26) said he has learnt a lot from team-mates Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Steve Smith, Ben Stokes at Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 and feels that will help in Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL).

The 17-year-old Sundar played for Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) in this year's IPL. The team reached the final where they lost to Mumbai Indians (MI) by 1 run.

Sundar set a record by becoming the youngest to feature in an IPL final. Not only that, he achieved another feat by bowling the most economical spell in IPL title clash, 0/13 in 4 overs.

Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar had praised Sundar during the IPL final on May 21. He wrote on his Twitter page, "No mystery ball, no doosra, no carrom ball, just pure off spin brilliance from Washington Sundar with the new ball."

In his maiden appearance in the cash-rich Twenty20 league, he took 8 wickets from 11 matches.

The Tamil Nadu slow bowler was signed by RPS as a replacement player for the injured Ravichandran Ashwin.

On Wednesday, Sundar spoke to TNPL's website and revealed how he has benefitted from Dhoni, Smith, Stokes and others in IPL.

"It was very good. I played with a lot of star players like (MS) Dhoni, Steve Smith, (Ben) Stokes. I learnt how to approach different situations both on and off the field. I learnt a lot from them and I am finding that experience helpful in the India Cements Ltd TNPL as well," he said.

"I mostly learnt by just watching them play. They have helped me in bowling in the right areas and how to do well in pressure games," he added.

Sundar has already impressed in the ongoing TNPL. He starred in Albert Tuti Patriots' two victories in as many matches.

Yesterday, his all-round performance took Patriots to 10-wicket win over Ruby Trichy Warriors. He had figures of 2/22 and scored 49 not out. In the league's opening game, he scored 69 and took 3/34 as Patriots defeated Dindigul Dragons. In both matches, he was adjudged Man-of-the-match.
