PM Modi to lay foundation stone of Lord Shiva-inspired international cricket stadium in Varanasi on Saturday
A modern international-grade cricket stadium is slated to come up in Ganjari, Rajatalab, Varanasi, designed as a majestic testament to Indian history, culture, and the revered deity.
The stadium, envisaged as an architectural marvel, meticulously integrates the rich cultural ethos and religious symbolism associated with Varanasi, India's spiritual capital.
The unique thematic architecture draws inspiration from Lord Shiva, evident in its Crescent-shaped roof covers and Trishul (the trident-shaped) floodlights.
The facade, or gates of the iconic stadium, will have Belpatra (Bilvapatra)-shaped metallic sheets, another symbolic element associated with the deity.
Furthermore, the ghat steps-based seating takes a cue from the iconic riverfront steps of the ancient Ganga Ghats of Varanasi.
The commentary box of the iconic stadium will be constructed in the shape of Damru (drum), one of the many musical instruments played by Lord Shiva.

A substantial portion of the 30-acre land required for the project, worth ₹121 crore, has already been acquired by the Uttar Pradesh government. The stadium will be able to house approximately 30,000 spectators and is being developed with an estimated budget of ₹330 crores. With this stadium, Varanasi will be equipped to host international standard cricket matches in just 2.5 years.
In addition to the main ground, the infrastructure will boast of a broad array of facilities. According to Ankit Chatterjee, CEO, Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association, it will be equipped with seven pitches, practice nets, lounges, a commentator's box, a media centre, and will even house a large hostel. Moreover, the stadium will function under a long-term lease held by UPCA.
Apart from PM Modi, a plethora of cricket's biggest names, including India's former captains, such as Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri, Sachin Tendulkar, and BCCI's top brass, including president Roger Binny, secretary Jay Shah, and vice-president Rajeev Shukla will be participating in the foundation laying ceremony.
The state-of-the-art cricketing complex in Varanasi, modelled on the city's ancient traditions and distinctive iconography, is anticipated to elevate the region's status in the cricketing world.
With its high-tech facilities and capacity to host international fixtures, it is indeed a significant step towards broadening the cricketing landscape of Uttar Pradesh and India as a whole. The ground-breaking ceremony, graced by renowned cricket legends and political dignitaries, further sets the tone for the grandeur expected from this remarkable initiative.
