Virat Kohli, other top batsmen fail Anil Kumble's 'One Hour Test'; Rahane alone passes challenge

Bengaluru, July 4: Team India Head coach Anil Kumble, on Sunday (July 3), gave a unique challenge to batters preparing for upcoming West Indies tour for Test series.

Indian cricket team, preparing at a camp in Bengaluru, was taken to Alur -- 40 kilometres away from Bangalore -- for the unique test.

The former India spinner, who has taken over the reigns as Head Coach, challenged Team India skipper Virat Kohli and his fellow batsmen to bat for an hour without being dismissed.

To make it more professional, team was asked to appear in Test whites instead of the usual match practice kits. The setting of the practice session was kept as close to the Test format as possible. Fielders were set and a scoreboard was also installed on the cricket field.

Sadly, every batsmen, including 'Run Machine' Virat Kohli, failed badly as they were dismissed by bowlers not one but a couple of times. Kohli looked comfortable against pace and played some good shots against fast bowlers, but the moment spinners were introduced Kohli too failed. Ravindra Jadeja troubled Kohli, who was beaten twice with the left-arm spinner's spin.

Opener Shikhar Dhawan too disappointed his coach after getting out twice. The left-hander was caught behind on both the occasions, to Kumble's dismay.

Shikhar's opening partner and most consistent performer in Test in recent times, Murali Vijay, too failed to impress the coach as he too was beaten twice by Ishant Sharma's pace.

Young KL Rahul, who impressed everyone with his technique and skills, got run out, thereby failing to complete the challenge. Same was the case with middle-order batsman Chesteshwar Pujara.

Rohit Sharma, who is battling for his place in the Test squad, again flattered to deceive. The talented Mumbai batsman hit a couple of balls out of the park only to pay his wicket to a reverse sweep.

Only Rahane came out victorious

Talented middle order batsmen Ajinkya Rahane, who got a chance to bat only after lunch, was the only batsman who showed resilience and passed the Kumble Sir's test as he batted throughout the one hour session without getting out.

The practice session aimed at ensuring all the batsmen get into the Test cricket mode, but it seems, most of the batsmen haven't yet succeeded in switching from T20 mode.

This would be a reason of concern for batting coach Sanjay Bangar and head coach Anil Kumble.
