North Sound (Antigua), July 23: West Indian batting legend Sir Vivian Richards has praised Indian captain Virat Kohli after he scored his maiden double century in the 1st Test on Friday (July 22).
On the second day at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Kohli struck a magnificent 200 to put India in control of the Test. India declared at 566/8 and the home team was 33/1 at stumps. (I don't deserve comparisons with Richards: Kohli)
Before the start of the series, Richards met Kohli and his team-mates. After the meeting, Kohli had tweeted, "What a memorable moment. With the greatest ever, Sir @vivrichards56. Words of gold from him."
Richards, who is part of the TV commentary team, witnessed Kohli's maiden Test 200 and was full of praise for the Delhi right-hander. (Nothing wrong in Kohli's attitude: Richards)
"I think it was a magnificent hundred. To score a double hundred at Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground is a formidable task in terms of what he has achieved," Richards told the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) website on Friday.
"I remember when I met him at the hotel (before the Test series) I did say good luck, but I didn't believe he would take it this far in terms of achieving a double. As a batsman myself, it was very pleasing to see and even though it was against the West Indies, I do appreciate seeing class and his was a classy knock," he added.
According to Richards, those who were not at the stadium, missed a "very special" innings from Kohli. "I think it's very special and for those of us here in Antigua and Barbuda (too), who appreciate seeing good knocks and seeing good batsmen perform. Those who weren't here today missed something, but I saw it and I am happy to say that it's the first time I saw Virat Kohli make century and to see him complete the double. I was here to speak, so I had a very good seat and I thoroughly enjoyed that," he said.
