Opener Chris Gayle is deeply hurt and sad

Johannesburg, Jan 12: Chris Gayle is deeply hurt and sad that Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo are not part of the West Indies squad for ICC World Cup 2015 in Australia and New Zealand starting next month.

Gayle, on Sunday (January 11) blasted the selectors for omitting Pollard and Bravo from the 15-man line-up, to be led by paceman Jason Holder. Marlon Samuels will be his deputy.

"To be honest, I'm so glad we actually won the series. This morning I woke up and saw the World Cup squad and there was no (Kieron) Pollard and no (Dwayne) Bravo. It really hurts deeply inside, and that's the reason I actually wanted to win the series," Gayle said after helping West Indies achieve a T20 world record chase against South Africa in the 2nd game at Wanderers Stadium.

The left-handed opener blazed his way to a 41-ball 90 as West Indies scored 236/6 in 19.2 chasing 232 to win.

"We have the best team here, and to see those two guys excluded is sad for West Indies cricket," Gayle added in his post-match comments.

He further said, "If you really believe in our ability, those two guys should be in West Indies cricket, both in South Africa for the 50-over tournament and in the World Cup squad."

Gayle said he did not know what is the reason behind the duo's exclusion and slammed it as "ridiculous".

"I don't know what the history behind it is. It's ridiculous selection from my point of view. To actually not have them in the side leading up to the World Cup as well. I don't know where our cricket is heading with this sort of situation. It's really sad," Gayle said.

Meanwhile, chief selector and World Cup winning captain Clive Lloyd feels they have selected a "very good team" which will do West Indies "proud" at the World Cup.

"I believe we have selected a very good team that will do West Indies proud at the World Cup. We have a good mixture of some good, seasoned players and some good youngsters who will fly the West Indies flag in Australia and New Zealand," Lloyd was quoted as saying in the Caribbean media.
