In a pulsating encounter against Australia in the opening T20 International in Visakhapatnam, Suryakumar Yadav, the acting captain of the Indian T20I side, exhibited a scintillating performance, guiding his team to a remarkable victory.
His aggressive 42-ball 80 not only secured a win for India but also showcased his prowess as the number-one ranked T20I batter in the world. His knock was laced with nine fours and four sixes as India started the bilateral series with a two-wicket win over Matthew Wade-led side.

As the T20I format returned, Suryakumar Yadav wasted no time in asserting his dominance. Leading the team for the first time, Yadav played a captain's innings, propelling India to successfully chase down a challenging target of 209 runs. The aggressive knock demonstrated his ability to adapt to the demands of T20 cricket, leaving the Australian bowlers struggling to contain him.
Aakash Chopra, host of JioCinema's daily sports show '#AAKASHVANI,' weighed in on Suryakumar Yadav's remarkable performance. Chopra highlighted Yadav's distinct approach in T20s, emphasizing that the player looks like an entirely different cricketer in the shortest format.
Chopra attributed this to Yadav's understanding of the T20 game, where he feels confident in executing his plans according to the prevailing conditions. He said, "In T20s, Suryakumar Yadav looks like a completely different player. His approach is completely different. He is unstoppable. Why does that happen? It happens because his DNA has been set that way now.
"He feels he understands the demands of this format very well and he can execute his plans according to prevailing conditions. Even the opposition is wary of his exploits, and it reflects in the field placements they introduce."
The former India opener further added, "In my view, it's not necessary that players have to be a part of teams in all three formats of the game. Surya can be a T20 cricketer. It's okay that he's left alone to focus on T20 cricket for the next six months.
"I hope we don't find ourselves in a position where we lose a T20 rockstar just because we want him to be a part of the team in all three formats."
Chopra also advocated for allowing players to specialize in specific formats, stating that not every cricketer needs to be part of all three formats. He expressed concern about the possibility of losing a T20 specialist like Suryakumar Yadav if he is burdened with the responsibilities of playing in all formats.
The victory against Australia comes on the heels of India's loss in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 final to the same opponents. Suryakumar Yadav, who was part of the ODI World Cup team, couldn't provide the late impetus in that game, where India posted 240 runs on the board.
The shock of the defeat still lingers among the fans, making Yadav's T20 heroics a welcome respite. However, many on social media were of the view that the Mumbaikar failed to replicate the T20 heroics in the ODI World Cup Final for a blistering knock like that could have taken his team to an imposing total in Ahmedabad.
Despite his match-winning and entertaining knock in Vizag, there was a section of fans that tried to troll the aggressive right-handed batter for not showing similar intent in the World Cup final. Social media has been flooded with memes on SKY's batting in ODIs and T20Is since last night.
Yadav's explosive innings as the T20I captain against Australia not only secured a crucial win for India but also reaffirmed his status as a T20 rockstar. Aakash Chopra's insights into Yadav's approach and the importance of specialised roles in cricket shed light on the evolving dynamics of the game.
As India looks forward to the remaining matches in the T20 series against Australia to prepare for the T20 World Cup in June next year, SKY's batting prowess will undoubtedly be a focal point for the team in the coming days.
