When Dhoni walked out for the toss at the Vidharbha Cricket Association (VCA) ground on Tuesday, he became the only captain to have led a side in all 6 editions of the World T20. However, he was not lucky with the spin of the coin today. New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and chose to bat.

Dhoni, who took India to World T20 glory in South Africa in 2007, the inaugural edition, has now captained the side in all global WT20 tournaments. (Can Dhoni create history?)

The 34-year-old Dhoni made his T20I debut against South Africa in Johannesburg in December 2006. Since then, he has played 63 matches.

Dhoni was first appointed as India's skipper for 2007 edition. Then, he was also handed the reins for the 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2014 editions of the tournament.

Before today, Dhoni had captained India in 28 World T20 matches. He has won 18 against 9 losses. 1 game was abandoned. He holds the record for most matches as a captain at World T20. In the last tournament, Dhoni-led India lost the final to Sri Lanka in Bangladesh.

This year, India are favourites to reclaim the trophy. If they achieve, it will be another record. No team has won the title twice. (WT20 schedule)

In all 5 editions, there have been 5 different champions. Also, no home side has lifted the trophy.

Dhoni is also the only captain in history to have won all three major ICC trophies (World T20 in 2007, World Cup in 2011 and Champions Trophy in 2013). He is the owner of several records and is India's greatest limited overs leader.

With the next edition of World T20 to be played in 2020, this could be Dhoni's last global T20 event.
