
Mumbai, Feb 13: The Women's Premier League (WPL) 2023 Auction held in Mumbai on Monday (February 13) saw 87 players being bought by five franchises.
The owners of all five WPL franchises - who gathered at Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai to form a squad for the tournament's first edition - spent a total of Rs 59.50 crore in the purchase of these players.
Gujarat Giants spent Rs 11.95 crore to buy 18 players, including six overseas players.
Royal Challengers Bangalore bought 18 players, including six overseas playes, by spending Rs 11.90 crore.
Delhi Capitals spent a total of Rs 11.65 crore to purchase 18 players, including 6 overseas.
UP Warriors exhausted their entire purse of Rs 12 crore to buy 16 players, including 6 overseas.
Mumbai Indians also spent the entire money to buy 17 players, including 6 foreign players.
A total of 449 players will go under the hammer in the WPL 2023 Auction as franchisees as 90 slots are up for grabs. From 409 players, the list was increased to 449 players as 23 of these players were from India, and 8 players from Thailand also feature in the updated list. Four players from England, two from Scotland and 1 each from Australia and Netherlands have also been added.
Each franchise can pick up a minimum of 15 players and have a maximum squad of 18 female cricketers for the first edition. Every team can have a maximum of seven overseas players, including one player from Associate Nation.
With INR 50 lakh being the highest base price set by the players, the BCCI has allocated a purse of INR 12 crore per team for the first edition of the WPL Auction.
The 409 players - 246 Indians, and 163 overseas players, including 8 cricketers from associate nations - have set their base prices at INR 50 lakh, 40 lakh, 30 lakh, 20 lakh and 10 lakh.
24 players chose to be slotted in the highest bracket of INR 50 lakh. Of these, nine are Indians while 13 cricketers are from other nations who have put themselves in the highest reserve price bracket.
The BCCI sold the five WPL teams for a whopping price of INR 4667.99 crores at the team auction. Viacom18 purchased the media rights for WPL at INR 951 crore. The BCCI will be getting INR 7.09 crore per match value for five years.
