Yuzvendra Chahal At Punjab Kings in IPL 2025: Gamble to Enter Mega Auction Pays Off For Senior Spinner

IPL 2025: Yuzvendra Chahal, India's star leg-spinner and the all-time leading wicket-taker in the Indian Premier League (IPL), is set to represent Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2025 after being signed for a record-breaking Rs 18 crore at the mega auction in Jeddah.

The Haryana-based spinner, who played for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in recent seasons, became the most expensive Indian spinner in IPL history through this deal.

Yuzvendra Chahal s Gamble Pays Off in IPL Auction

Chahal, who has 205 wickets in 160 IPL matches, now shares the title of joint-most expensive Indian bowler in the tournament's history with his new PBKS teammate Arshdeep Singh. Arshdeep, who also opted to enter the auction pool instead of being retained, was reacquired by PBKS for the same amount after an intense bidding war.

Yuzvendra Chahal Makes Calculated Move to the Auction Pool

Chahal's decision to part ways with Rajasthan Royals stemmed from a strategic desire to test the auction market. Despite consistent performances, including 27, 21, and 18 wickets in the last three IPL seasons, RR's retention priorities seemed to focus on younger players.

The franchise retained skipper Sanju Samson and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal for Rs 18 crore each while emerging talents Dhruv Jurel and Riyan Parag secured deals worth ₹14 crore each. Shimron Hetmyer was retained for ₹11 crore.

Chahal anticipated that RR would not match his market value of ₹18 crore, even with his stellar track record. Opting out of retention allowed him to secure a lucrative contract while exploring new opportunities.

Why Yuzvendra Chahal Opted to Leave Rajasthan Royals

Sources informed myKhel that RR captain Sanju Samson wanted Chahal to stay with the team. Samson personally reached out to Chahal to persuade him to stay, the leg-spinner had already made his decision and the wrist-spinner, after consulting his coach and family, opted to go into the auction pool.

"Sanju wanted Chahal to stay back with the team and even called him but Chahal had already made up his mind. He decided to move on after consulting with his coach Randhir Singh and family," a source close to the development informed myKhel.

The appointment of Rahul Dravid as RR's head coach also played a role in Chahal's decision. Having been left out of the Indian playing XI during the T20 World Cup 2024 under Dravid's tenure, Chahal was uncertain about his prospects of being a regular starter at RR.

"There isn't any conflict between Chahal and Dravid, but the spinner wasn't confident about his role under Dravid's watch. He decided to explore greener pastures, and the move has paid off," the source added further.

A Fresh Start with Punjab Kings

Chahal's acquisition by PBKS - under new head coach Ricky Ponting - signals a new chapter for the 34-year-old, who remains one of the most reliable bowlers in the T20 format.

His impressive IPL resume and continued hunger to represent India in T20Is ensured fierce bidding at the auction. Even his former franchise, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), actively pursued him, underscoring his value.

At PBKS, Chahal will form a lethal bowling partnership with Arshdeep Singh, Lockie Ferguson, Marco Jansen and Harpreet Brar amongst others, adding depth and experience to the team's lineup. The franchise will be counting on his consistency and ability to deliver in high-pressure situations to propel them toward a strong IPL 2025 campaign.

Despite his stellar IPL performances, Chahal has been on the fringes of India's T20I squad. However, with another successful season, he aims to make a compelling case for a national team comeback. His move to PBKS not only underscores his market value but also reflects his determination to prove his mettle on the biggest stage.
