Cullen Jones Biography
International Debut and Achievements
Jones made his international debut in 2006, competing for the United States. He quickly gained recognition, winning the Breakout Performer of the Year award at US Swimming's Golden Goggles Awards in 2006. In 2018, he was inducted into the North Carolina State University Hall of Fame.
Personal Life and Interests
Jones resides in Charlotte, North Carolina, with his wife Rupi and son Ayvn, born in 2019. He holds degrees in English and Psychology from North Carolina State University. Outside of swimming, he enjoys fashion design, playing video games, spending time with friends, and visiting amusement parks.
Retirement and Current Endeavours
After missing qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Jones considered retiring but continued to compete. Inspired by his friend Anthony Ervin's performance at the 2016 Olympics, he joined the Wolfpack Elite programme at North Carolina State University. In early 2020, he announced his retirement from competitive swimming.
Post-Retirement Activities
Jones now focuses on his roles as a coach, development officer, and motivational speaker. He is also involved with USA Swimming's 'Make a Splash' programme, which aims to teach children in disadvantaged communities how to swim. He believes that changing mindsets is key to encouraging young African-Americans to swim.
Awards and Honours
Jones has received several awards throughout his career. In addition to his induction into the Hall of Fame, he was the second North Carolina State University swimmer to win both an NCAA title and an Olympic gold medal. His distant relative Rodney Wallace played American football for the Dallas Cowboys as a defensive tackle.
