Dana Vollmer Biography

Vollmer competed at the US trials for the 2000 Olympic Games at just 12 years old, making her the youngest competitor at the event. She went on to achieve significant success in her career, including being named the 2009 NCAA Swimmer of the Year and winning multiple awards such as the Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year and the Honda Sports Award for Swimming.

Challenges and Injuries

Throughout her career, Vollmer faced several injuries. She tore her ACL in 2001 and sustained back and shoulder injuries during her first year at the University of Florida. In 2013, she was affected by a shoulder injury at the World Championships in Barcelona.

Personal Life

Vollmer resides in Danville, CA, USA with her husband Andy Grant and their two sons, Arlen (born 2015) and Ryker (born 2017). Andy also has a background in swimming, having competed for Stanford University. Vollmer's brother Nick is a third-degree karate black belt and owns a karate studio.

Return to Swimming Post-Motherhood

After giving birth to Arlen in February 2015, Vollmer returned to training in May of that year. She went on to win a gold medal with the US 4x100m medley relay team at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Following Ryker's birth in July 2017, she resumed light training by mid-August.

Training with Jeanette Ottesen

In 2018, Vollmer reached out to Danish swimmer Jeanette Ottesen to explore training together. Ottesen had also become a mother recently and aimed to compete at the 2020 Tokyo Games. Vollmer spent two weeks training with Ottesen in Europe, which rekindled her passion for swimming.

Retirement

Vollmer announced her retirement in August 2019 at the US Championships. She expressed that it was time to chase new goals and left the sport with a full heart and countless memories.

Current Endeavours

Post-retirement, Vollmer has taken up motivational speaking. She enjoys hobbies such as woodworking, crafts, interior design, and playing the piano. Her educational background includes a degree in Anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley.

Vollmer's sporting philosophy is driven by her love for swimming and a desire to challenge herself. She looks up to US swimmer Jenny Thompson as her idol.
