Dwight Phillips Biography

Phillips faced numerous challenges throughout his career. At 14, he broke both legs after being hit by a motorcycle. In 2001, he injured his right hamstring during the World Championships, preventing him from completing his long jump attempts. A left Achilles tendon injury also affected his performance at the 2011 US Championship.

Sporting Philosophy

Phillips maintains a positive outlook on life and competition. He believes in embracing both victories and defeats. "Life is precious. You only live one time. I think you should live it with a smile," he said. This philosophy has helped him navigate the highs and lows of his athletic career.

Transition to Long Jump

Initially, Phillips was a 400m runner in college and also focused on triple jumping. However, he eventually decided to concentrate on long jump, a decision that paid off. His love for the individualism of track and field drove him to excel in this event.

Coaching and Achievements

Since 2011, Phillips has been coached by Rana Reider from the United States. Under Reider's guidance, Phillips achieved remarkable success. At the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, he was assigned bib number 1111 and won his fourth world title with a jump of 8.45m.

Other Sports and Activities

Before focusing on track and field, Phillips played basketball for Tucker High School in Tucker, Georgia. In 2004, he participated in a public information campaign against illegal wildlife trade, jumping over a pile of elephant tusks in an advertisement for Wild Aid.
