The athlete comes from a family with a rich history in athletics. Her older sister, Tirunesh Dibaba, has won four World Championship gold medals in the 5000m and 10000m events. Tirunesh also holds four World Cross Country Championship gold medals.

Her cousin, Derartu Tulu, is a double Olympic champion in the 10000m event for Ethiopia. Another cousin, Bekelu Dibaba, was also a track runner and is referred to as her sister. Her younger brother Dejene is an emerging talent in the 800m category, while her younger sister Genzebe excels in regional cross country events.
