Winnington competed in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where he finished seventh in the Men's 400m Freestyle with a time of 3:45.20. He also participated in the Men's 200m Freestyle heats and was part of the team that won bronze in the Men's 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay.
At the World Championships, Winnington has been a consistent performer. In Budapest 2022, he won gold in the Men's 400m Freestyle with a time of 3:41.22. He also secured silver medals in both the Men's 400m and 800m Freestyle events in Doha 2024.
