Zonderland pursued higher education in medicine at the University of Groningen. He is fluent in Dutch and English. Balancing his career as an athlete and a doctor, he has managed to excel in both fields.

He resides in Heerenveen with his wife Linda and their two sons, Bert, born in 2018, and Jan, born in 2021. His brothers Herre and Johan have also represented the Netherlands in gymnastics.

Leading up to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Zonderland struggled with fitness and considered skipping the Games. He felt more unfit than fit due to frequent illnesses. Despite these challenges, he aimed to reach the finals.

Retirement Plans

Zonderland planned to retire after the Tokyo Olympics. The postponement of the Games due to COVID-19 affected his motivation. However, he decided against early retirement to avoid regrets about not participating. He postponed further education to focus on the Games fully.
