Erik Heil Biography

Heil's journey into sailing started at age five at the Yacht-Club Tegel in Berlin. By age 12, he competed in his first regatta. Before focusing on sailing, he played tennis for eight years. "I grew up in a sailing club," he said.

Club and Coaching

Heil is a member of the North German Regatta Association (NRV) in Hamburg. His national coach is Marc Pickel. Heil's sporting idols include German beach volleyball player David Klemperer and sailor Johannes Polgar.

Sailing Philosophy

Heil finds 49er sailing both physically and mentally demanding but extremely fun. "It never gets boring," he shared. This philosophy has driven him to excel in his sport.

Partnership with Thomas Plossel

Heil and his crewmate Thomas Plossel first sailed together in 2001 at Yacht-Club Tegel. They competed in the Teeny, 420, and 470 classes before moving to the 49er class in 2011. "We had a great group, which is why we stayed with the sport," Heil said.

Olympic Success

The duo won a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Despite considering ending their partnership due to educational commitments, their teenage coach Michael Koster persuaded them to continue competing while advancing professionally.

Future Ambitions

Looking ahead, Heil aims to win a gold or silver medal at future Olympic Games. His commitment to both his medical studies and sailing career showcases his dedication and passion for both fields.
