Jager's passion for running started early. He once said, "I recall telling people if I could do anything for a living it would be to run professionally." He studied Health Studies at Portland State University after transferring from the University of Wisconsin-Madison to follow his coach.

Jager's career boasts several notable achievements. He won silver in the 3000m steeplechase at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Additionally, he broke the US national record in the event at the 2015 Diamond League meet in Paris, France.

Challenges and Injuries

Throughout his career, Jager faced multiple injuries. In 2019, he suffered a stress fracture to his left talus, causing him to miss the entire season. He returned to competition in February 2020. In 2018, he dealt with a torn iliacus muscle and an abdominal injury.

Earlier in his career, Jager missed the 2010 season due to a fractured right navicular bone that required surgery. He had also broken his left navicular bone in high school.
