The same year, he crashed during the Tour de France and fractured two vertebrae in his lower back. Earlier, in March 2015, he fractured his lower back at the E3 Harelbeke race in Belgium.

In 2012, Cancellara had surgery to repair a quadruple collarbone fracture after crashing during the Tour of Flanders in Belgium. Despite these setbacks, he continued to perform at a high level.
