Florian Wellbrock Biography

Wellbrock has been associated with SC Magdeburg and is coached by Bernd Berkhahn at both club and national levels. Known by the nickname "Flo," he has achieved numerous accolades throughout his career. In 2021, he was named Best Male Open Water Swimmer by the International Swimming Federation (FINA). He also received the Male Open Water Swimmer of the Year award from SwimSwam and the European Swimming Federation (LEN).

In 2019, Wellbrock made history at the World Championships in Gwangju, Republic of Korea. He became the first swimmer to win gold medals in both pool and open water events at a single edition of the championships. He secured gold in the 10km open water swim and later triumphed in the 1500m event in the pool.

Personal Life

Wellbrock resides in Magdeburg with his wife, Sarah Kohler, who is also an accomplished swimmer. Kohler has represented Germany in various international competitions, winning gold in the mixed open water relay and silver in the 1500m freestyle at the 2019 World Championships. She also earned a bronze medal in the 1500m freestyle at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Influences and Interests

Wellbrock cites his parents as the most influential people in his career. He looks up to German triathlete Marcus Herbst as his idol. Outside of swimming, he enjoys listening to music and driving. Before competitions, he has a ritual of listening to rap music to get into the right mindset.

Awards and Recognition

Wellbrock's list of awards is extensive. In addition to his 2021 accolades, he was named Male Open Water Swimmer of the Year by Swimming World magazine in both 2019 and 2021. In 2018, he was honoured as Sportsman of the Year in Bremen, Germany. His name was added to the Sports Walk of Fame in Magdeburg in October 2021.

Challenges and Resilience

Despite his successes, Wellbrock has faced challenges. At the 2019 World Championships, he was favoured to win the 800m event but did not make it to the final. He described this as a "kick in the guts" but used writing as a way to process his disappointment. He bounced back to win gold in the 1500m event, demonstrating his resilience.

Family Tragedy

Wellbrock experienced a family tragedy when his sister Franziska died after hitting her head during a family swim when he was nine years old. To honour her memory, he has a tattoo below his left shoulder with a line from Sido's song 'Feel Free' that reads, "Enjoy your life, you'll be dead longer than you're alive."

Future Ambitions

Looking ahead, Wellbrock aims to win a gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. His journey so far has been marked by both triumphs and setbacks, shaping him into a stronger athlete ready for future challenges.
