WHAT IS THE FIFA WORLD RANKING?

FIFA World Ranking is a system applied for ranking of national football teams. The national teams of FIFA, which is a world governing body of football, are ranked according to the result of their match with the highest ranked teams being placed at the top. The FIFA World Rankings were first introduced in December 1992. In the first list released by FIFA, Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain were the top eight teams. Brazil has held the number one FIFA ranking for the longest time. Brazil - who are five-time World champions - currently hold the top spot in the FIFA World Ranking.

FIFA WORLD RANKING PROCEDURE

The points system used for scoring for all full international matches that FIFA recognizes is determined using a points system. Numerous changes have been made to the FIFA ranking system in response to complaints that the previous methodology did not accurately reflect the relative strengths of the national teams.

The Elo rating system used in chess has been incorporated into the FIFA ranking system's current iteration from August 16, 2018. The new model for determining the FIFA World Ranking was approved by the FIFA Council after extensive testing and analysis in 2018.

This new version of the World Ranking created by FIFA was termed "SUM." This version relies on adding/subtracting points won or lost by a team for a game to/from the prior point totals rather than averaging game points over a specified time period as in the previous version.

WHAT IS FIFA RANKING USED FOR?

According to FIFA, the FIFA World rankings provide "a valid metric for comparing national A-teams" and are used to rate the development and existing skill of the national football teams of its member nations. These FIFA rankings are used in the computation or as the sole basis for seeding tournaments.

The 211 teams that make up the FIFA association are compared in the FIFA World Ranking. Criteria such as the number of games a country has won and how "important" those successes were, such as in big tournaments or against tough opponents are used to calculate the FIFA ranking. Best thing about the FIFA is that rankings do not guarantee an automatic qualification for the FIFA World Cup. Instead, since each region, which is also known as a 'confederation', has a limited number of slots. The ranks of even the top-tier teams are then utilised for seeding in regional qualifying events. This model ensures that several lower-ranked teams also get to qualify for the World Cup instead of higher-ranked teams based upon their performances in the qualifying events.

INDIAN FOOTBALL TEAM FIFA RANKING

The Indian football team's current FIFA Ranking is 117. They were 106 in March but have gained points on the back of recent wins and clean sheets in May-June 2023 games. In the 2021 FIFA Rankings, Team India were 104 and further dipped two places in March 2022. The Blue Tigers again jumped to 104 in June 2022 but lost two places to find themselves at 106. But good results in 2023, improved their rating points and a jump of five places to 101. India's highest FIFA Ranking is 94, which they achieved in 1996, and their Average Ranking is 130. In the year 2018, India ended at the 97th spot, their best performance in the last decade.
